Did they do a pressure test, and a leak down test? That is how you test. You can also test coolant for combustion fumes. You needed an auto electrician in the first place, not someone guessing with your money. Limp Mode only becomes active if a sensor fails and that sensor failing could cause catastrophic failure to the engine with it not working.
