Richard, the fuel is to create the fuel pressure that is needed. But, the pressure regulator is only to keep the correct pressure at the fuel rail. On almost every vehicle the pressure regulator is either on the fuel rail "OR" on the fuel pump module inside the gas tank. If you have no fuel pressure I would suggest checking for power and ground going to the fuel pump in the tank before buying any part. Because if you have power and ground at the pump then you will need a new fuel pump. If you don't have power and ground at the pump. You'll need to check for blown fuses and swap the fuel pump relay for one that is the same type in the fuse block. Erica, you need to see if you have power and ground at the fuel pump connector you can do this with a test light from auto zone. Check the wires going to the fuel pump relay for a ground with the ignition on. The reay requires a ground sent from the ecu to activate the relay and sent power to the fuel pump.
According to the wiring diagram, there is no inertia switch on a Mazda MX-6. The fuel pump circuit only has a pump relay which is powered by a fuse and grounded by the computer. And if the car did have an inertia switch it would not affect the ignition system. If you have no spark and no fuel pressure I would check the circuits for the pump, coil, and computer at those fuse locations and beyond. Could have shaken something loose at the key switch or in the wiring.
It could be a relay that keeps the fuel pump running when the ignition switch is in the run position. My jeep had this problem, where the pump gets power in the start position but once the key returns to run, the engine shortly stops running because the pressure in the fuel line drops off as it is used by the running engine, it usually died within 3 seconds. my relay was under hood and there were several of the same type in there, I switched the fuel system one with the one for my AC(which only blows hot anyway) Hope this helps...
check the impact saftey switch to see if it was tripped it should be listed in your owners manuel. It is a saftey feature in case of a collision it shuts down the fuel pump
