Issue: I ahve a user who is unable to define any custom paper sizes on an HP2600n printer after upgrading the computer to Windows Vista. The desired paper size is 5.5” x 8.5” card stock printing from the manual feed tray. The printer is on a Server 2003 print server. The user has full admin rights on his machine and on the printer properties (only "special" is unchecked in the security options), but custom sizes defined in print properties do not persist when modified. I’m not sure if there is a Vista security setting I’m not considering or if the printer’s drivers or firmware needs to be updated. I haven't tried new drivers or firmware. Has anyone seen this issue before?
Went to HP support web site and found the following info. The HP drivers link will take to their download site If you haven't installed the Vista Print drivers yet.
Our church bought new computers with Vista Busines two years ago and after struggling with it for 6 months went back XP Pro. This was before any Vista service packs had been released so I'm not sure if these issues have improved. We are in no hurry to upgrade to Vista. Some articles I've read about 6 months ago recommended waiting for windows 7. I haven't followed how the release of windows 7 is going. Vista is a VERY DIFFERENT ANIMAL and can be frustrating. Been there and I feel your pain.

It won't take a lot of time, but the results are definitely worth it. On each Vista PC that is connected to the HP2600n, uninstall the printer. Make sure that the folder which contains the software is empty. Then do a restart on the computer.
Once that has been done, reinstall the printer, ensuring that the drivers are specifically set for Vista. When this is done, try the printer.
It should work as advertised.
Make sure that nothing is set for any different OS. I have the same printer working on both XP Pro with the latest service pack, and on Vista Home Premium, also latest service pack.
I actually have the printer installed using the USB port on an older Compaq Deskpro, with a USB 1.1 port, and the quality of the print cannot be beat!
It works quickly, smoothly, and with no problems. Just select that printer as the output device, send the job there, and sit back and admire the quality when it's done.
Good luck,
-a.
