Hello Travis, I don't know if your equipment is under warranty (it's an option to repair or replace it) I will add the website to try.
They can be different factors can originate this problem:
Connections: you can check the connections verifying that they are not damaged.
Excess of temperature, a minute or equivalent is a short time, but it is not too much to check; When it is turned off, disconnect it from the power supply and check if it is too hot.
Impedance: check speaker Impedance (in this case you have to use a meter) would be with a mechanic or person with some knowledge of electricity or electronics, but if you have a meter you could also try it yourself: if the measurement does not exceed 4 ohms is deficient and may be the cause of the problem.

If your set was manufactured around July 2005, you may need a firmware upgrade to solve this issue. On the Sony website you can enter your model # and serial # to see if you TV is affected. If so, it is easy to have done and may be free from Sony. It sounds like the issue they described in the writeup on the required formware update. I had mine done within few months of when i bought it (purchased in Dec 2005) and it has been working flawlessly since.
Good luck!

protection error message means that your unit's fan is not working
it is a feature to keep your unit from overheating
check if there is anything blocking the fan of your unit from rotating
if problem still persist replace the fan

Does the power light stay on? If so, you have an inverter problem. If the power light goes off, you have a power supply problem.

i have the same problem, i've eventually resorted to putting a box fan next to it and taking the cover off....kinda ridiculous but beats buying another unit and this point
