This could be a problem with the scanning assembly (Lamp or CCD board). I would try turning the machine off for 5 minutes and then turning the machine back on. Also make sure the scanner is not locked. If this doesn't work you would have to replace those parts.

Typically ALT+F10 on boot up. Some newer models that have vista you just do by pressing F8 and it shows up on the windows boot menu. If neither of these work, you probably need the restore disks.
