Try this ... make sure the switch is in the 4X4 position ... drive a few feet (20-50) while moving slip the truck into neutral then flip the switch to 2 wheel. if does not work try the same trick in reverse..
The pressure on the drive train must be relaxed for the truck to shift...
you can try jacking on side up as well (two wheels)

SOURCE: jeep stuck in low four wheel drive

Put the transmission in neutral, emergency brake off, foot off the brake pedal, now try shifting out of 4 wheel drive low. If that doesn't work, drive forward, and again do the above, trans. in neutral, roll to a stop, foot off brake, try to disengage. What you're probably experiencing is called drive shaft 'wind up', and it is very difficult to disengage, but do the above and it should shift out of 4 low. countrycurt0

SOURCE: four wheel drive

The transfer case has a motor mounted on the exterior of the transfer case, and they do go bad. There is also a transfer case controller (computer) that is part of the Body Control Module (BCM) and i have seen where a malfunctioning "door" open or closed sensor would cause the transfer case controller to inhibit,or,not allow 4WD engagement.Long story short is,scan the vehicle computers for trouble codes, including the BCM,and repair any codes present. If codes are repaired and still no 4WD,test the electric motor that is mounted on the transfer case. When all external controls are operational and tested as operational, the last conclusion would be an internal transfer case malfunction, but as a last resort. This is why it is important to verify and/or repair all external controls, inputs, and commands. The particular transfer case in your Ford has an aluminum case half that is prone to wear, and i shim out the excessive end play as part of the rebuild,so overhauling it in your garage does require more than meets the eye.Good luck.

Encoder motor located on the transfer case is usually the problem. It is the motor that shifts the transfer case.

2003 Ford Broncos 4 wheel drive stuck in 4 wheel but light is on but other lights are on they flicker off and on.

Ford Bronco or Explorer? They discontinued the Bronco in 1996. Is it stuck in 4 high or 4 low? Do you have a manual shifter or a push button? If you have an automatic electric system you may have a bad transfer case motor or switch. If you have the manual system, make sure that the shifting levers are free and not damaged or restricted from moving. Try rocking from forward to reverse while trying to shift out of 4x4.

In general, the Ford Bronco running gear is identical to an F150 4X4 running gear for the same year. The only difference is the length of the rear drive shaft. I doubt the F250 gear will fit, since typically the F150 running gear is made by ford, and the F250 running gear comes from commercially available parts (Dana, etc).

Wont disengage out of 4 wheel drive 1998 ford ranger first time its stuck in 4 low we have backed up turned switch numerous times shut it off and restarted

Be sure to put the truck in neutral, while engine is running, while you disengage from 4 wheel drive (low) to 4 wheel drive (high) and then finally to 2 wheel drive. It is critical to shift transmission into neutral when switching out of 4WD Low, as indicated in your owner's manual. Hopefully, this will help to FixYa problem!

I'll bet you've also got auto locking hubs. If you do, replace them. If you don't, you might have a bad transfer case.
