SOURCE: Coleman Powermate 5000 reset problem

Yes, there must be a protection device on the unit somewhere. It should be indicated in the owners manual. It may be on the box the outlets are in, or built into the cover of the generation unit.

SOURCE: I have a 5550 generator

Hello, it sounds like either you have a voltage regulator failure, the rotating field coil is shorted or opened, or the exciter windings have failed. No easy answer because there are a number of issues here as you can see. Depending on how old the unit is you might have warranty. I would suggest you take it to a generac service center to have it checked out. I have 30 years experience with generac units. If it is a voltage regulator issue, (this can be expensive) you can get a jobber regulator. This link is for a good generic substitute. http://www.mcphersoncontrols.com/html/mcp_products/voltage_regulators/MTS63-4.html
I have used this regulator on 4000 watt to 50 kw units successfully. If it is a winding, then to rewind the stator part of the generator is expensive and a new generator is cheaper.

SOURCE: GENERATOR WILL RUN BUT DON'T PRODUCE ELECTRIC

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Without a model number... I am guessing about what type / brand and MODEL of generator you have. I have to assume it is a Coleman Power mate.

Try flashing the field. Do this.. take and electric drill and plug into the outlets of the generator. Turn on the output power GENERATOR ON. Squeeze the drill trigger and rotate the chuck as fast as you can. This will induce voltage into the stator and they usually will start producing power. When it does produce power it will try to yank the drill chuck head out of your hand so keep that in mind.

If the above does not work...
Remove the small cover from the center of the endbell. It covers the end of the rotor shaft and has 2 brushes under the cover.
INSPECT the brushes visually (do not remove them yet)
(Generator OFF!)
Use a meter to read resistance by probing the electrical contacts of the brushes. You MUST read LOW resistance. This is the rotor winding.
No resistance or high resistance
Remove the brushes inspect for damage. Try to probe the slip rings of the rotor. (You might have to make a 14/2 Romex electiral wire extension to get some solid copper wires to touch the rotor slip rings) Again you must read LOW reistance.

If you have low resistance and the brushes are good.....
Reinstall the brushes. (TEST for AC) Start generator
STILL NO OUTPUT?!!!!
Use a meter on DC to read AVR voltage output to the brushes by probing the brush terminals. You should read 3 - 7 VDC. No voltage.... hmmmm Possibly an AVR problem but...

Try this.
Rig up a 9 Volt battery that you TAPE the wires to the battery terminals and the case of the battery
Just loosely connect the 2 wires to the brushes. Wrap the battery with a rag it might explode if you don't remove it fast enough. Your going to yank this off as soon as it produces power QUICKLY.

Plug in a light or a small fan so you can see that power is being produced. Let it run a few minutes before shutting it down.

To do anything else I need to know your generator model number to do winding and voltage regulator checks.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

How to repair an Electric Water Heater that Fails to Heat Water

If your home has an electric water heater that is not working properly, start your troubleshooting here When an electric water heater fails to heat water, either the power to the water heater has been interrupted or there is a problem with the controls or heating elements. Perform these diagnostics:

1) Be sure electricity is being delivered to the appliance. Check the main switch on the water heater and the circuit breaker (or fuse) that serves the water heater. If the circuit breaker has tripped, reset it by flipping it all the way to OFF and then back to ON.
If a fuse has blown, replace it with a new fuse with the same rating. If the circuit breaker or fuse repeatedly blows out, call a qualified electrician to check and repair the circuit. Note that the water heater should not share a circuit with another appliance—it draws too much power when heating.
2) Check the high-temperature cutoff in the water heater. Open the panel and push the reset button. If the button doesn’t make a clicking sound or you still don’t have power after pressing it, then your high-temperature cutoff is probably bad. Call an electric water heater repairperson.
3) If there is any water inside the compartment, this could cause the thermostat to malfunction. Leaking water means that your water heater may need to be replaced. If this is the case, be sure to read the “Storage Water Heater Buying Guide” and related buying guide articles before making your purchase.
If these steps don’t solve the problem, you may have a problem with your heating elements. You can replace these yourself following the manufacturer’s instructions if you feel comfortable with this type of repair, or call a water heater service professional.

NO OUTLET POWER

There can be several causes for this symptom. Does the outlet have a breaker or "switch" that is tripped? If this is a GFI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet, first disconnect any cord or equipment plugged into the outlet, then press the "reset" button in the middle of the receptacle. The GFI's should not/will not reset with anything plugged in. (If they are working correctly.) More specific information needed if this does not take care of the problem. There are numerous other things which could be causing this problem, loose conections, bad generator, broken or damaged wires on the electrical system, inverter problems, etc. Refer to your owners manual if at all possible, take a look here at this link if you don't have a copy.<<< http://servicenet.dewalt.com/Products/Detail?isId=true&productNumber=DG6000&selectedType=6326# >>>>

Generator turns on and runs but no electricity coming from unit i tried a reset on the circuit buttons, any suggestions

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly,

Since I don't have a model number to work with I am going to assume this is a generator with brushes. (I need your model number!)
Having said that... TRY THIS:
1. Plug in an electric drill to the output power plug and turn on the output power switch with the generator running.
2. Squeese the drill trigger switch and rotate the drill chuck as fast as you can. This will flash the field of the generator and often output power starts right away. NOTE: When power starts it will try and twist the drill chuck out of your hand. Just let go of the trigger and the drill chuck.

If you have an inverter type power head the steps are different for flashing the field. The easiest way is to do a male to male power cord from utility supply power connection and turn on the output power switch to re-establish a field in the PMG of the rotor.

There are other steps but without a model number this is what I am sending off at the moment. Respond with a model number if the steps above do not work and I will help you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The electrical mains switch was turned off. When I turned the oven back from the mains , the oven turns on but does not generate heat. I think it is something small do with my settings. Can u help....

If it has a timer, then when the power was on again, it probably reset to auto, you need to reset it to manual cooking
Refer to your instruction book if you have one.
Otherwise it is a question of pressing 2 or more buttons at the same time on the timer to reset it to manual

DEWALT DG6300B NO POWER OUTPUT

Hello avid.....

If there is no power to the receptacles:

1. Turn the circuit breaker switches off and disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.

2. Turn the circuit breakers on and test the GFCI's by following the procedures in this manual

on page 1 -

TO TEST A GFCI:

Start the generator. Turn the auto idle switch off. Push in the TEST button (A) on the receptacle.

The RESET button (B) will pop out. Power is now off at the receptacle.

If the RESET button does not pop out, the GFCI is not working. Do not run

generator until the problem can be corrected. To restore power to receptacle,

push the RESET button in. If the RESET button pops out during operation,
stop the generator and check the generator and equipment for defects.

3. Place the voltage selector to the 120 Volt only positions (unless you are using a tool that

requires 240 Volts).

4. Turn the idle control switch off.

5. Turn the circuit breaker(s) off and reconnect the electrical loads. Be sure that the plugs are

securely connected to the receptacles.

6. Turn the circuit breaker(s) on.

7. If there is still no power at the receptacles, take the generator to an authorized DEWALT
service center. To locate a DEWALT service center nearest to you, call 1-800-4-DEWALT

I have a model 71-408 B which just stop heating

If I understand correctly, you have electric water heater.
Heater suddenly stopped heating.

Four things cause sudden loss of water heater.
1) Reset button located under the top cover is tripped > turn off power, remove cover, press reset button > if reset keeps tripping, go to the troubleshooting link shown below.
2) Electric power to heater is interrupted > check circuit breaker > test for voltage > look for loose wire on breaker
3) Upper element burned out > test and replace element
4) Upper thermostat bad > replace upper thermostat

Reset button is best suspect.
