Using your belt, slip it under the agitator. Give a very hard yank and the agitator will pop up and off. DO NOT HAVE YOUR FACE OVER THE AGITATOR WHEN YOU PULL ON IT. It can pop up with force, and end up breaking your nose! So be careful!

SOURCE: how do I remove the agitator?

Technically, the agitator should just pull straight up and off. Realistically, that just might not be that easy. There is an agitator puller. If you take the small plastic cap off the top of the agitator (if it is still there) you then slip a metal ring over the top of the agitator and tighten down three set screws into the plastic on the side of the agitator, near the top. (biteing into the plastic, but not enough to crack the agitator) Then, a pull collar is hooked over the edges of the pull collar and the center of the puller goes right down the center of the agitator (right on the center of the transmission shaft) Perhaps you could fashion your own pull collar. Your machine is well over the average life of a washer, so I wouldn't worry too much about damage to it. It may be time to invest in a new machine soon. Please don't bother rating, as anything but a Fix-Ya drops my score. Good luck with your repair.

SOURCE: Hotpoint 7 cycle agitator sopped spininng/10 years of flawless operation

Possible there is no power to the motor at the cycle of spinning or agitation. It is possible that the program controller unit is a suspect, you need to use a multimeter to confirm the case as the power to the motor could be measured

Can't remove agitator on hotpoint washer

I have this same model of Hotpoint washer. I pulled up on the agitator and that separated it from the hub. I removed the hub by loosening the bolt at the top of the hub with a socket wrench. I removed the hub after removing the bolt. I removed the long stringy fabric by unwinding it and lifting up. that's all there is to it. Really simple. Everything went back together very easily. Only hard part is lifting the agitator up with enough force to free it from the hub.

How do you remove agitator in a hotpoint top loader washing machine

Hi. The agitator is fastened to the agitator shaft and its movement is driven either by splines or a simple clutch assembly, which is removable as well. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction.

Various makes and models differ in how the agitator is removed. In some newer models, the agitator just lifts straight up and out. However, in most models you will have to preform a combination of the following steps. First remove the fabric softener dispenser, if any. It should either lift or screw off. Next remove the cap. It may lift off, screw off or failing that, it may need to be pried off.

Beneath the cap some agitators are secured in place by a bolt. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove that bolt. Some Maytag's may have a screw near to the bottom of the agitator post that must be removed. Now try to lift the agitator straight up, possibly with a little back and forth rocking motion. Use caution when pulling, the agitator may come loose suddenly and hit you in the face or send you flying backward.

If the agitator is particularly stubborn, you can loop some rope under one side of the agitator at the bottom and then up over a broom handle. Now loop it again under the other side of the agitator and back up to the broom. Brace one end of the broom handle against the top of the washer and lift up on the other end. Double check that you have removed anything that may be securing the agitator in place. Do not use too much force or you may damage the washer cabinet, agitator or injure yourself.

At the top of the agitator has a cap get a flat screw driver and pry up and turn. When it comes off there is a nut you have to take off. Then pull up on the agitator..

These older units had an insert in the agitator that would strip out.  Remove your agitator and take to a parts store. They should be able to help you out.

Hotpoint washer

Two types of Hotpoints had two different ways of removing the agitator. One had a pop off top that when you removed it, you can remove the center bolt, the remove the agitator. Another one you had to put your fingers under the agitator and pull straight up to unclip the agitator. Good Luck!!! Jim
