Have you unplugged it? Or is there a hard reset for it other than the reset button? Can you try to hold the power button down and see if that does anything? But try to pull the filter and stuff out again, after you have unplugged it, see if that works.

Remove the plaques and using an old tooth brush clean with mild soap and water.. Rinse thoroughly, towel dry and finish drying them with blow drier. The interior of the unit and it's filter should also be cleaned. Depending on what type filer it uses (Aluminum mesh or soft mesh plastic) they too and can be washed with mild soap and water, rinsed and thoroughly dried. Any other type filter material may need to be replaced. Clean the interior with canned compressed air with a straw nozzle and a dry paper towel.

Of course, before you do any of the above, unplug the unit.

This is what the machine is designed to do! The machine emits a low amount of ozone, which is the purifier/sanitizer created by sunlight. Close to the machine, it's concentrated. When it spreads throughout the room, it kills odors and bacteria, and creates the fresh smell of clean air. The air truly is "oxygenated," because ozone is simply O3, instead of O2, and breaks down quickly.
If the numbered dial is set too high (try it at 300 to 500) it will smell "bleachy." Your "rule of thumb" is that when you've been away, and enter the home, you should experience the same fresh, clean smell that you get when you step outdoors on a bright spring or winter day.
When you're doing something that creates odors, like frying fish or cooking sauerkraut, turn the dial up to take care of that odor quickly, then turn it down for normal operation.
Leave it on the manual setting for continual purification. Often, the auto setting has been disabled, which might be the case in your older machine. (These machines can be 12-15 years old!) For an owners manual, go to www.vollara.com (new name of Ecoquest/Alpine). They may be able to help you.

it turns off the timer

The black film is caused by mold,which is moisture behind the walls.Clorox with make the black film go away but mold will come back.

it is a cleaning mode

I would certainly check the fuse on the one that does not power on. If the fuse is good then there probally something wrong internally.

As for the one that does not sanitize, has the plate been cleaned? It can have a build up of dirt on the metal grid and or the contacts that will cause it not to generate ozone. The plate and contacts can be cleane with an amonia solution of one part amonia and one part water. Soak the plate in the solution for 10-20 minutes then scrub with an old toothbrush, and rinse the plate with tap water. You can clean the contacts with the amonia solution using a toothbrush. Allow the plate to dry overnight or you can use a hair brush to dry thoroughly.

i dont know if it will kill mold. I had mine in the houston area--high humidity and it definetly cleaned the air. You could check with the manufacturer, their customer service is excellent.
