Flat screens normally have 3 different inputs from tv. Regular is tv coax cable, then audio/picture by using special rca cables, then last HDMI. You can use any of those inputs except hdmi because you already are using that input. You may be able to buy a hdmi splitting device that will allow both the tv and the player to input to the single hdmi input. Check Radio Shack or Wal-Mart.

Temporarily you can hold the lid closed with your hand and press play and leave the lid after it loads the disc. But for permanent solutuion you will require to repair its lid switches,

There is no region free firmware available for your player at the moment. There is a guy in australia who has created one but will not release it. HD DVD's dont have region coding. I assume its for regular dvds?

No region hack for this player.

Might be a resolution issue, the menus are most likely in 480, while the video might be in a resolution not supported by your tv. Try changing the resolution and see what happens.

If your HD-DVD player has been locking up after a recent firmware update, you may wish to attempt rebooting/resetting the unit before considering any kind of repair option.

First I would suggest seeing if you can enter the "Setup" menu from the "Welcome" screen. If you are able to do so, under the "Maintenance" option there should be a command called "Initialize." After selecting this command, you will need to turn the player off and unplug it for several minutes. This should cause the unit to reset.

If doing so does not resolve the problem, you may wish to then look for a pinhole reset button on the back or underside of the player. Typically players that have a reset button will return to their original factory settings when this button is depressed. Please keep in mind that not all HD-DVD player models will have such a feature, so you may wish to refer to your owner's manual documentation for more information.

Alternatively, many products (DVD players, computers, etc.) will have what is often referred to as a "soft reset." This is typically done by pressing and holding the power button down for 10 to 15 seconds.

Should your player still be stuck on the "Welcome" screen after trying all of these, you may need to contact Toshiba or a local repair technician for further assistance. Remember that if you are unsure where your local repair facility is, you may always obtain service and repairs by bringing your player into your local Best Buy™ store.

When you put the DVD in, you mean it will not launch the appropriate player to start playback of the video?

Maybe your autoplay settings are messed up.

Try launching your movie playback software and attempt to manually play the disc and see if this works.

Another thing, is your drive listed under my computer?

All HD discs are region free but the standard dvds are mostly region coded.
