First off, check your transmission fluid which is thoroughly explained in the video I’ve provided a link to, definitely watch it as your explorer’s transmission isn’t quite as straight forward to check the fluid as many others are. If it’s low, add the proper amount.

Are there any warning lights illuminated on the instrument cluster? If so, have it checked for free at a local parts store or whatever it takes as there may be an obvious answer to be had by just hooking up a diagnostic scanner. This sounds like an internal transmission issue, it may be, but it’s possible that it isn’t. If there’s no light on and no easy solution from s scanner, Get a transmission filter and the appropriate fluid from a parts store and change the transmission fluid/filter or have a qualified friend/family member, or a qualified shop change the fluid. It’s a simple process and they’re all the same(basically) so if you’ve done this to another vehicle in the past you won’t have any issue. If neither helps, you’ll probably want to start looking for a good used transmission with low miles and a warranty which is easily found online and from local junkyards, salvage yards, parts suppliers, etc. This will be the most affordable option, a transmission that’s “remanufactured”, rebuilt, or new is quite expensive. If you have ever changed a transmission or know someone who can help you or even do it “on the side” then go for it, just call a transmission shop and get a quote to rebuild/replace yours and you’ll see why I’m suggesting everything else and the transmission shop or dealership is a last option. If Money isn’t an issue just pay someone to fix it, otherwise check on a good used transmission and line up sine help swapping them out. It’s not the hardest thing to do, but it’s hard to do alone unless you’re in a fully furnished shop with transmission specific equipment- especially a transmission jack but you can rent them as well from a local rental store- just call around and do your research about any/all companies you deal with before spending a penny, it pays to do your research- especially with this stuff and there are some shady shops and suppliers out there so just don’t skip the research and looking at reviews, etc. Ask people you know if they can reccomemd an affordable, honest, and capable person or shop to help you get this issue resolved. Good Luck, and start with the small stuff first as this may be a suborn fix.

SOURCE: The transmission is hanging up in 2nd gear and not

The absence of 3rd and 4th is imposed by the transmission computer as a precautionary measure. The system has detected fault and rather than risk doing any greater damage has provided a limp home service. It needs to have a transmission specialist look it over and read the error codes. How do your transmission fluid levels look?

SOURCE: E40d trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, only rev. 1+2

check or replace your thottle position sensor tps that trans needs to know where the throttle is to shift if it is bad it will do as you say wont shift to third
another telltale is it will act like it goes into lockup when shifting into reverse and stall the engine

What were the rpms when you shifted? It could have been the engine. Does the engine crank over? If not you may have engine problems. Seized or timing belt or bent valves.

2007 GP GXP. Tap shift works in 1st-3rd gears, but will not shift into 4th when using tap shift. Heads up shows 4th but trans stays in 3rd. Works normal when in auto mode.

Im assuming it is a 4 speed transmission and if you are using the "tap shift" which is for performance situations and you wouldnt typically need 4th gear. What speeds are you trying to go into 4th? If you are going too slow it wont upshot because you rpms might drop too low. Will it not go into 4th at highway speeds?

'95 Tacoma 5speed no 3rd or 4th gear. It feels like it goes in but there is nothing there, it's as if in neutral in those gears.

Make sure that the shifting lever is not restricted and not allowing the gears to engage. Other than that, sounds like you have an internal transmission problem.

How do I fix a manual shifting problem. Is it the clutch or transmission. Is there an additive I can add to the transmission to try and help ?

Sounds like the syncro may b damaged. Typically a clutch problem would be noticeable in all gears, especially shifting into reverse when vehicle is running but not moving. Try giving a 2 count for engine RPMs to drop before going into third to see if that helps. Won't fix anything but might cut the grinding sound. Till you can get the tranny fixed or replaced.

1996 gmc jimmy will not shift to 3rd gear

Hi, It may be in LIMP mode.

What is "limp-home mode" ? This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Common failures on 4L60E, symptom any possible repair:

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under-hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter :ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Trans seems noisy when moving in 1st and Reverse, noise goes away instantly if you shift to N or the trans goes into 3rd gear: Reaction planetary is worn out due to high miles or insufficient lubrication. Not a critical failure, but not a good sign either. R&R sooner rather than later.

3rd gear starts, can manually shift through all gears. When car has been turned off for a bit, then back on it will run normally.: VSS dropoff w/ Hi-stall converter. The rpms are too high, but VSS is showing no movement. Happens after a tire burning take-off. Doesn't store a code, will not throw a CEL (I've heard that it will store a code if it happens 3 or more times). Cure: Reprogram PCM for VSS dropoff -- PCMforLess knows about it.

If you can get the Jimmy for no more then $500.00 and the engine sounds good and body is good, you may want to invest in the repair of the jimmy. Also note that to have a close look at the fuel line along the frame on the drivers side just by the back doors, the line is know to corroded there on all the SUV's
