My Mantis will run but I can't get it to "wrap up". It is a 2 cycle gas and about 6 years old. I have rebuilt the carburetor. It's just doggy and won't go into high speed. I have messed with the high speed needle adjustment until I am about ready to drop kick it into the street and let someone run over it. But,....I truly love the machine when it is working right.

If your Mantis has a ZAMA carb, replace it. Don't bother with a carb rebuild kit.

I had exactly the same problem, did everything you did. New carb fixed it. Runs like new now.

Try removing and cleaning the spark arrestor screen at the exhaust port of your muffler. It is usuallu covered by a rectangular looking cap with 1 or 2 phillips screws holding it. Take the screen out, scrub it with a small wire brush until all the carbon is gone and you can see through it. Put it back the same way you removed it and your Mantis will be ready for another garden tilling

Where is the engine number on mantis tiller an old one

In the Mantis 2-cycle tiller:
SV number is located between the gas tank & the carburetor, behind the gas line, on a black and silver tab on the silver engine housing. It will consist of the letters "SV," a number and another letter.

Mantis will only start if i squeeze throttle

The carburetor may need cleaned or rebuilt, empty out the fuel and put new in if you have not already. If that doesn't work remove the carburetor, clean it and inspect the diaphragm (small engine shops will do this as well if you don't feel comfortable). Echo engines are great runners but this is very common- rebuild kits and brand new carburetors are available online. The work can be very quick and easy if you are careful and patient, if not then leave it to the pros.

I have a 2-cycle Matis Tiller that was sitting for a while and will not start. I replaced the old gas with new, replaced spark plug, adjusted high/low set screws and choke to no avail. Can the carburetor...

Hi, I also have a small garden tiller (not a Mantis) that experienced a similar problem. What I did was remove the carberator and completely cleaned it with standard spray carb. cleaner (this is available at ant auto parts store or Wal-Mart). After I cleaned and reinstalled the carb. it ran fine. This was two years ago and it has been running fine since. What I believe happened was the gas evaporated and the remaining residue from the gas "gunked" up the carb. Once it was removed, the problem was solved. If this does not work, take a look for any broken wires. Sometimes a rodent will make a meak out of a wire. This happened to one of my cars. Good Luck!

Mantis tiller starts but will not stay running

Carburetor problem. Two stroke engines use oil mixed with gas. Old fuel or setting over the winter will cause varnish and sludge in the Carburetor. Start by buying a can of carburetor cleaner and mixing a new can of fuel.
1) Dump the old fuel and check replace it with new.
2) Remove the air cleaner.
3) Pump the prime bulb 3 or 4 times, set the choke, spray the insides of the carb with the cleaner and then try and start it . It should sputter and run for a few second but chances are it will take a few sprays to clean the jets

Mantis tiller runs but bogs at full power then stalls

The problem is in your carburetor. Glaze can build up over the winter and cause this very problem. You can try a fuel additive which will clean the carburetor available at any auto parts store since it does run. However, if the problem continues the carburetor may have to be soaked in a cleaner for two hours and rebuilt

Difficulty adjusting carb for smooth idle and full power tilling

Your quickest fix for this problem is to simply replace the carburetor, a Zama K54A. Do it all the time. After that, if you can find a 2 cycle oil, Opti-2, it's the best you can use and it's a one mix for all your 2 cycle equipment (blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, etc.) It's the only 2 cycle I sell in my shop.
