Try not to over work the engine so much.

SOURCE: My Mantis Tiller 4cycle engine

I had same issue with my 2 year old 4cycle. Check if the carb is moving full stroke with throttle movement. I had almost no movement at carb at full throttle, found the trigger in throttle handle was cracked and bent rather than pull cable. I called mantis and they promptly sent a new handle bar ***'y with new cable, throttle ***'y Etc and that solved my problem.

BTW: If you cannot wait, I did figure out that if I pushed the carb to open with the throttle trigger fully pulled it would run at high, but when you let go.....LOL

SOURCE: Tiller starts and tills for about 2 or 3 minutes

Probably just clean the carburetor. it sounds like its not picking up enough fuel to sustain itself

How do i replace pull cord on mtd 31cc tiller

Remove your recoil housing. Turn the inside to see if spring is broken. If spring is good wind it up as tight as it will go without forcing it. Once you have it wound all the way then back it off one turn or until the eyelet meets where the rope comes out. tie a knot in one end and feed through both holes. Pull the rope through till the knot is tight then attatch your handle. Once the handle is in place slowly let the rope wind itself in. pull a few times to make sure your knot is holding and reinstall on engine

I have a Yard Machine rear tine tiller that has sat unused for 4 years. I replaced the engine and while in goes forward and backward, when I engage the tines they won't rotate and the engine bogs

Transmission/differential.
Perhaps the unit sat for 4 years because the tines would not turn and your replacement engine has not solved the real problem.
I'd say disassemble the chain case to discover what's locking the tine drive.

Tiller shuts off when I engage tines. I have changed the oil, cleaned the fuel tank out, checked the plug, I just need to know what adjustments, if any that I need to make.

Is the gear box full of oil? If it is dry it will bog down the engine and stall it. Will the engine run at full speed without the tines engaged? If it doesn't maybe the full throttle mixture screw needs adjusted out CCW a little.

I have a yard machines 31cc y28 17'' how do I fix the pull string it is pulled out fully

Take the top cover off, You should then see 4 bolts around the engine cover, take these out and the cord head will come of,Depending on where the cord broke is the question of using the same cord, But if you're getting a new cord you will need to thread the cord into the eye for the cord, Tie a knot to prevent it pulling apart. then tie your handle on. After this you will wind the cord up tight on the pulley and a screw driver holding the pulley from moving while you put the cord and cap back on the engine, You can then start back installing the bolts and the other cover..
