My DSC-W1 works fine - except it suddenly won't take pictures. When I depress the button to do so, the red light comes on for the red eye, the green light flashes on the display whilst it's being depressed and then goes solid. A little hand icon flashes up after a couple of seconds - but no shutter action. Similarly with the video, press the button and nothing happens - just continues to say STBY. What's wrong? How can I fix it? Any ideas really welcome.
The SWitch Blocks may be defective.
This kin of fault develops in the Humid weather.

There is something wrong - your camera doesn't work. ; )
Let's try a few things:
1. I know this has happened to me before. The memory stick has a little write-protect switch on it. If it has been moved, then the camera can't write any image to the stick and you wonder what happened to the camera. Make sure you check that.
2. It is possible that the built-in micro-chip is not working properly (this is different than your removable memory stick). I want you to remove the batteries for two minutes. This should remove anything in the micro-chip's memory. Replace the batteries and turn on the camera.
3. Press the reset button on the bottom of the camera. You'll need a sharp object for this; a ball point pen that is clean will do the job.
This will rest the date and time, etc.
4. Turn on the camera and check it out.
Try it and let me know if it changes anything.

Nothing is wrong. they are digital buttons and this happenes if signal do not reach properly. If camara is used many times and dust problem then sometimes such buttons. thats all.
If You are not technical pelase donnot try to open and clean it as most of part are very delicate.

Maybe the shutter got wet and sticky. You can try look into the lens then press shutter button to take picture. If you don’t see the movement inside the hole, the shutter doesn’t open, it will take black picture.
try taking out the battery's and then put them back on also make sure it is switched over to take photos there should be a button to change it back to photos.
Not that it helps at all, but I have the same problem with my sony DSC 80 but its because I dropped it in a river. It works just fine, other than the fact that it takes black pictures now.
I can take perfect pictures indisde a building, but taking a picture outside, I can see the item but if I take the picture and looking at the picture the screen turns blank, seems to me that there is to much light exposure.
The Sonys with Nightshot are best at IR, IMHO. The W1 does not have this feature. I imagine it could take IR pics in Manual mode, but the exposures would have to be so long that picture quality would suffer to an unacceptable degree, IMO. The V1 has nightshot, and the price on them has come way down since the V3 was introduced. If you want to get into IR, I suggest a V1.
If it has the remapping option, it doesn't say so in the manual.
from what I understand, every camera comes already with "dead pixels" and its already remapped so that you won't easily notice it. with time, more pixels drop off and you need to remap it again.
Now the thing is, the remapping just makes the dead pixel an average of its surounding pixels, and there are photo editing programs that do the same thing, have the remapping option. so basicaly what i'm saying is that if you're out of warranty dont be in a rush to get it fixed.

There is a well documented problem with the W1 (and its brother, the P100).
If you are shooting in good light, you will have no problem.
If you are shooting in low light or flash, you will encounter various degrees of blurred photos.
Unlike most cameras, the W1 has only two f-stops (f2.8 and f5.2). So the camera must select one or the other (nothing in between).
The firmware in the camera will try to select f5.2 as long as it can in low light. This results in a slow shutter speed. And with flash you usually end up with a shutter speed of 1/40th of a second.
A slow shutter speed is the cause of the blurred photos. If you can hold the camera perfectly still under low light conditins (and flash) you will get good photos. If you use the cameras manual mode and manually select a faster shutter speed you will get good photos.
It appears that Sony could fix the problem with a firmware change so that the camera made better use of the ISO settings along with the f-stop selections.
However, they have not done so.
