Makes clunking noise when changing modes--does not spin dry
Spin cycle does not seem to eliminate enough moisture. During spin cycle drum brakes (stops) followed by agitator turning for a short period followed by drum beginning to spin again. Machine makes a series of clunking noises during mode shifts.Belt appears fine but motor seems awfully loose--flops around on mounting bracket. All motor mounting bolts seem to be tight and in place.
Traces of white powder (from nylon gears ?) are present in bottom pan around circumference of gearbox?. It does not smell like detergent nor does it feel like it.

Have you tried moving the clothes around in the drum to balance the drum BEFORE you was them? If that works, you have solved the problem! Most people forget that when cloth gets wet it gets heavy so leaving the clothes unevenly placed in the drum dry will make a real problem when they get wet!
Check and see what type detergent you are using. I bought regular liquid detergent and the machine began making noise during the spin cycle and the drum would not spin.I was informed that you have to use detergent that is labeled HE (High Efficiency). The regular liquid detergent will suds up during the wash cycle which then causes the drum to slip and not spin during the spin cycle. What you are hearing during the spin cycle is the drum slipping.Unplug your washer for 30 minutes and let it reset. This lets the suds dry out. Run a cycle with no spin to rinse out the drum. This should eliminate your problem. If you have clothes in the machine, run a cycle with no spin, just don’t add any more detergent. Then run the normal cycle with spin a second time with no detergent. I hope this cures your problem.
the cluncking sound is not a brake system since there are no brakes, but the stabilizer of the drum. as when it stops turning the whole weight of the drum 'hangs' on the stabilizers. That might also be the problem with not spinning fast enough, although I think that its not spinning fast enough because there's too much water inside. I would check the drain hose and drain filter, either one of these two are clogged up, and therefor not letting the water out.
hope you'll find the problem soon.

You didn't give to much detail about the noise, other then clunking. Does it sound like it's metal against metal? Does it sound hollow? When does the noise take place before, during or after the spin cycle.
The easiest thing to do is check to see if the motor is loose, or if you might have too much slop or slake in the belt, if you do then replace and readjust the belt.
Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
