I have my mint condition dual record player hooked up to my Harmon Kardon AVR 120, however the output sound is alot lower and only goes up to +10 DB, I checked all the connections and they are perfect

Record players have a phono output that is much lower level than other audio equipment. If your receiver has a phono input that will have a preamp to adjust the level. Or your turntable may have a switch between phone o or line level and that would increase the volume as well. Most audio signals are line level but phonos are a magnetic signal that is much weaker and needs to be Amplified by a preamp in your receiver or in the unit itself.

HOW TO CONNECT A DVD ON A STANDARD OR HDTV

TO START OFF WITH WE MUST UNDERSTAND SOME FUNDAMENTAL
BASICS .

1 We will examine together in a progressive way the different typs of cables available with a breaf description ,starting with the worst type of cable to the best

I would like to specify i will show 2 pictures 1 the connecter on a tv 2 the cable that goes with this connecter

No 1 Coaxial cable Coaxial cables have been around for a very long time until the end of the 70 s begine 80 s this was the only available cable .
Whats important to know about coaxiale cable is that audio and video signals pass all together this obligates a lot a filtration to seperate signals creating a lot of noise

10_31_2011_6_06_44_pm.jpg

No 2 composite or yellow , composite cable mainly appered in the beginning of the 80 s the main difference of composite compared to coaxial is that audio is seperated. The yellow cable is our video signal, composite (yellow ) must be matched with audio cables one red for right side one white for left side . advantages over coax better sound since audio is seperated from video , also better video because audio signals are absent from video signal so less filtration is necessary
10_31_2011_6_12_22_pm.jpgNo 3 S-video . S-video appeared at the end of the 80 s beginning 90 s . like composite video the audio signal is seperated it also has to be matched with a red and white cables for audio . whats the main difference between composite (yellow) and S-video ? well if we keep this simple lets say that a video signal is composed of many signals . Our composite cable passes all of them in the same time , but are s-video cable seperats colour signals cromonance signals and puts a seperate ground for each ,gives superier video signal and s-video can support higher resolution 480i 10_31_2011_6_34_01_pm.jpg.No 4 component . Component cables apeared mid 90 s. again like composite and s-video audio is seperated component cables must also be matched with red and white for audio .Component cables come in a paire of three one blue one green and one red , the main advantage of component is we are seperating the video signal even more with component we are seperating the three primary colours red blue and green ,also component cables have higher resolution than composite or s-video up to 1080
10_31_2011_6_32_16_pm.jpg
No 5 DVI (Digital Video Interface) appeared latte 90 s beginning 2000 . DVI was a majeur amilioration and like composite -s-vide and component, audio was seperated ,audio cables had to be matched . The main advantage of DVI is its multipine connecter that permitted us to seperate even more prescisly our video signal . Like composite DVI supports high resolution 1080

No 6 and the last HDMI (High Definition Media Interface ) the cream of all
there are many advantages with HDMI 1 1080 p resolution 2 no audio cables necessary 3 multi pine connecter 4 communication protocols ( the ability for devices like a tv and a dvd to comminicat together ,making things more user freindly 10_31_2011_7_05_52_pm.jpg

Reoccurring audio problems

All TVs today are actually computers which also receive TV frequencies. The audio has to be decoded from the digital signal then goes to an analog audio amplifier. When you hear no sound with the picture do you hear anything coming out of the speaker? A hissing sound when the volume is way up?

If you hear a hiss then the amplifier is working but not getting anything to amplify. This could be due to a bad solder connection or a problem with the CPU and/or a switching circuit. Without a schematic I'm guessing here.

The bottom line is, there's probably nothing you can do to fix it unless you're used to dealing with SM (surface mount) technology and can touch up all solder connections from the CPU to the audio amp.

Whoever is fixing the TV should be able to tell you where you're losing the signal from the RF decoder to the amplifier as long as the problem is not before the decoder (which is probably all in software that the CPU runs.)

Can hear volume on tv but cannot see picture...tv flickers like it wants to come on but it does not....screen is dark and continually shows hdmi like it wants to come on. the tv before would turn on after...

Many people who use A/V receivers use them to switch only the audio. ie, hook up all your video sources to the TV, and switch between these sources using the TV remote. Just connect the audio cables from your video gear to the Onkyo. The reason is that video signals are more susceptible to problems in A/V receivers than audio signals. better to connect the video sources directly to the TV.

You may want to ask for more clarification about this.

Unable to play DTS-HD & True-HD

What do you hear? Do all other modes work ok?

If Audio Select (Page 44 and 98) is set to HDMI you will hear silence if no HDMI signal is present. I think AUTO is the best choice here.

-------

On Page 98 of the manual it says a bunch of things concerning automatic signal detection and input selection.

Initial configuration D) INIT. CONFIG
Use this feature to select the settings of the audio input jack select, active decoders and extended surround when you tum on this unit.
....

Audio select AUDIO SELECT
Use this feature to designate the default audio input jack select setting (see page 44) for the input sources connected to the DIGITAL INPUT jacks when you tum on the power of this unit.

HDMI set E)HDMI SET
Use this feature to select the component to play back HDMI audio signals.

Support audio S. Audio
Use this feature to select whether to play back HDMI audio signals on this unit or on another HDMI component connected to the HDMI OUT jack on the rear panel of this unit.
...

CHOICE = RX-V663

FUNCTION
Plays back HDMI audio signals on this unit. The HDMI audio signals input at the HDMI input jacks of this unit are not output to the HDMI component connected to the HDMI OUT jack on the rear panel of this unit.

CHOICE = OTHER
HDMI component connected to the HDMI OUT jack.

NOTES
This unit transmits audio and video signals input at the HDMI input jacks to the HDMI out jack only when this unit is turned on even if "S.AUDIO" is set to "OTHER".

I'd look in these areas for specific guidance.

Unable to get ps3 to play when hooked to receiver

The audio inputs on the receiver need to be set to receive the Optical signal on the switch you set the ps3 to. ie Game, DVD, AUX. Each switch needs to be set to receive the audio signal coming into it. Usually on the remotes setup feature.
