are you pressing and holding the button for 3 seconds until it flashes 3 times as that is howyou turn it on and off, not by simply pressing the button and then letting go.

Turn your h500 off. Then long press the multifunction button untilnit lights up steady blue. Then search on your phone to locate and pair with the headset.MarkMotorola Support

Did you check that you didn't activate mute?
If it is on mute. Press both volume buttons at the same time you will hear two descending audio tones.

The ear hook on my H500 broke as well.  I called Motorola (866-289-6686) and they are mailing me a replacement.  Even though This bluetooth has a 1-year warranty.  I purchased mine in Jan. 2007 and was covered but the rep didn't verify anything regarding the purchase date so even if you're outside of your warranty, you might still give it a shot.
