Got a new battery a while ago, charged it and all was good. It's sat for several months. Charged the battery back up and lights work, but only get a click when turning the key. Any thoughts? Can a battery go bad?
Sitting is the worst thing for a bike. you have a bad battery. if you have to leave the bike for a long time, put it on a battery tender or at least start it up once a week. the gas will go bad in the fuel system and the battery will fail. also, when you get a battery, make sure to get a good one from the dealer, dont get the cheap ones from walmart or autozone. a factory battery will last 2-5 years. you will be lucky to get 1 year from a cheap battery.

If lights dim when trying to start,Battery is to weak(may have 12 volts but not enough amps)
Bike dieing when removing power from jumper says the lighting coil on the stator plate is bad and this could also have killed the voltage regulator,Which would kill the battery by over charging it.
Hesitation and carbon smell could be from a non firing cylinder.
So,Take the battery and have it load tested (free at most auto part stores)
Check for power from the lighting coil on the stator
Replace the voltage regulator.

Yes, it could be the regulator. Running a battery flat MAY kill it, so try to recharge it and then load test it. Put a fully charged battery in the bike. Hook up a voltmeter and start the bike. Rev engine to about 3-4000 rpm. If your regulator is working you should be getting about 14v. If the reading does not change from what it was before you started the bike, your charging system is not working. Do test the parts before you simply replace them.

Sometimes after trying to start a bike with a weak battery the starter solenoid gets damaged,or loose connections develop on the solenoid due to heat.It should be next to the battery.
