1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4 liter 4 wd with intermittent loss of power frequelently to point where no power at all causing to pull off to side of road. Have replaced both 02 sensors with new Bosch units, full tuneup, new exhaust manifold, new air intake system and coil.
Has the fuel filters been done?There is an often overlooked filter on the left side chassis frame,near the fuel tank.It may be under pressure so be careful if checking it.Hope this helps

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, easy to change and will cause this problem. mounts to intake. If that doesnt work, replace the idle air control solenoid. You can also replace the crank and cam position sensors later if you still have issues,
4 wd part time is the most fuel efficient becuase it only engages when the tires start to spin. to engage the different 4wd modes pull up on the lever next to the shifter and you'll feel it engage into to its respected modes. recommended you engage the 4wd while moving slowly except for 4wd low full time which you need to put the shifter into neutral before you can engage it. remember 4 wd low full time is needed when none of the other modes work.
I am having the same problem Darrel with my 98 jeep cheeroke sport, from the research i have done so far, It seems to be a problem with the fuel pump/filer, or thenFuel pump relay control circuit, as the problem seems to only occur every once in a while, i am assuming it is a loose connection in the relay, as jeeps tend to be abused, thourh off road conditions. hope this helps
EGR VALVE is carbon up you can clean it by taking it off and using carbon cleaner also replace the sensor for the egr valve. EGR controls idle if carbon up it will cause this problem you explained.
