Hi,
Intermittent hard power steering, at the begining of the turn of the steering wheel, once disturbed past the hard part, works normal.
Had fluid change, I notice a sensor, on the control block tower of the rack, is this at fault ? thanks buckleyeng.

SOURCE: ignition cylinder won't turn

I had the same problem in a 94' trooper. Basically the Ignition lock cylinder is wore out and you need a new one. Mine wouldn't turn past lock and no matter what I tried it wouldn't turn. You can go on auto zone and find the part, mine was about 61 bucks, it comes with keys and the ignition cylinder. The deal is that to get your new ignition cylinder in you have to get your original turned to off or acc I can't remember. You'll see with your new ignition cylinder that when you turn the key there is a button that can be depressed but only when the key is turned past lock and it also won't depress in start. First, disconnect battery and wait like 30 minutes. So, what you do is take a screwdriver handle and place it up against key and take some pliers or something and beat on it a couple of times, this gets the key in deep enough to where you can eventually turn it. I swear it will eventually turn, once there, take off the top and bottom plastic covers off steering wheel/unscrew electrical wires on back of ignition cylider and other side and you know the button I referred to basically you have to depress that with key in acc or off and it will slide out. If your having trouble finding the button look at new ignition cylinder in comparison to old one and you can see where the depressed button is on side closest to you, you'll see a little hole up on the side of housing that you can depress.

SOURCE: when turning steering wheel to left very hard to turn

Sounds like the begining of a bad rack n pinion. We can eliminate the pump because the car turns to the right fine. There is no loss of fluid? The only thing left is the rack. It is a fairly commin issue. Use to call it morning sickness, The cars would be hard to turn in the morning or when first started but after running and warming up for a while they would start to work properly.

4020 steering to the right is lazy , steering to the left is good , hydraulic system holds 2000 lbs. good any idea of problem and how to fix. gear shift is under steering wheel pretty sure a 69 model.

Have you had this tractor for some time or is it a recent acquisition? The JD 4020 1969 serial numbers go from 201100-222159. Lazy power steering to one side has two commom possibilities, internal leakage in the control valve, Or, if the front end had been worked on, the tie-rods were not set to center the steering wheel when setting the toe-in. If that is the case, and the steering wheel is properly centered when driving straight or has fewer turns turning right than when turning left, the steering wheel was re-centered by removing it and resetting it on the steering shaft spline, in which case it is rarely perfectly centered. If that is the case, the control valve may not open much and restricts oil flow when turning right.
It is possible the steering cylinder piston seal leaks in one direction more than the other, or that the front wheel toe-in is wrong.

1996 camry le 6 cylinder. cannot get ignition key to turn to start car. gear is in park and have tried adjusting steering wheel

Hi the steering lock could be causing you the problem try turning the steering wheel hard left whilst turning the key and do the same hard right.

it may be hard to turn but you should find once you have moved it slightly it will unlock allowing you to turn the key so dont adjust the steering wheel turn it to the right as if your trying to turn to the right and if this dont let the key turn turn the wheel to the left it only needs to move slightly to allow the steering lock to free the key,

doing the above should solve you problem

give me a shout back if you have any further problems ok

My 1967 mustang power steering control valve and ram were leaking I bought a rebuild kit for both of them when i reinstalled them and turned the motor over the steering wheel rotates violently hard to the...

The control valve is normally in Neutral. When you turn the steering wheel, it moves the gearbox, which is connected to the pitman arm, which is connected to the control valve. The control valve then sends pressure to the ram to either extend or retract it. I highly recommend that you disconnect the control valve from the pitman arm, center the valve, then center the wheels. Reconnect the pitman arm to the valve and restart the car. If it does it still, the problem is in the control valve ... replace it or rebuild it again.

79 vette i changed the power assisted steering hoses

Sounds like you blew out the rack.Double check that you installed the correct hoses and fluid on/in the vehicle. Bleed the unit by turning the steering wheel from stop to stop while the vehicle is running until there is no foaming or bubbles in the resovoir. If this
doesn't cure it then take it to a shop and have them pressure test the pump and rack . The tester can be pricey and the procedure is a little dangerous. If you have the tester by all means use the service manual and it will tell you the correct procedure for hooking up the tester and how to use it. But be careful and wear safety lenses and gloves.Power steering fluid is very hot and the pressures are high. If you determine that it is the rack replacing this is an adventure and your gonna need a wheel alignment after its done. I suggest you take it to a shop where the Tech's are ASE Certified. Good luck and keep me posted

The control valves from the power steering unit lock in position at extreme angles. Either the fluid is dirty - replace it - or the unit is worn out - valves can be replaced separately and the unit refurbished. Or just buy a new unit.

Power steering heavy turning left in isuzu rodeo 4x4

check the power steering pump, if its good than it will be rack and pinion issue. the pump create a high pressure to help assist with steering, and the rack and pinion work like hydraulic cylinder which receive the pressure from the pump and the steering work like control valves. by turn left or right you controling the pressure to make the wheels turn either right or left. check and see if you have any leaks.

Powwer steering out of control

It will probably just sit there when you start the engine, then take off like a rocket when you touch the steering wheel? The wheel will take off in the opposite direction of the way you tried to turn the steering wheel. (you start to turn the wheel to the left and it rips out of your hand and goes right until it slams the full right stop, then rockets back to the left until it hits the full left stop and shoots back to the right again and repeats this process until the engine is shut off.)
If this is the case, you have the hoses from the control valve to the power cylinder reversed.
