I am suspicious that the car runs hot, looses coolant but the mechanic did not do a compression test to check for head gasket/ cracked head problems
From you statement ,I am thinking that the car has overheated , and blown a head gasket at no 5 cylinder
change it youll b fine i drive a 99 camaro with 165000 miles on it and i change my tranny fluid every 30000 miles if not comfortable doin that try slick 50 first
the air flow does not have any thing to do with the thermostat
make sure you had the right cabin air filter and put in the right dirrection
the air flow is control by three devices calls mode door actuators, if this goes bad then you may not have enough air flow to a certain area
