16 bit software is not compatible with 64-bit engines. The lowest number of software bits, called bit width, a 64b system can sometimes run if lucky, is 32b. 16 bits is the equivalent of 1 byte. 64 bits is therefore 4 bytes wide. This means that the 64b system reads digitally coded instructions 4 bytes at a time, as one function to perform. So if it tries to read all 4 bytes of a 16 bit 1 byte program it just sees meaningless garbage. In fact, the header of the program file will ID it as 16 bits so that the 64 bit system knows not to even try to run it, as random weird instructions could corrupt or damage the computer.
