Hello, the error 5100 as to a lot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corresponding side panel (the front screws are behind the Grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on).

Thanks

I am trying to print on my Canon MP830 and I have had two error messages. 5C10 and 5100. I don't know what these errors are can you please help?

There seem to be a number of involved suggested fixes for the 5C10 error code.

Please go to this web page, and click the "Service and Support" link.
This will display a "Please enter your question" field. Type "5C10" into the field and click the Search button.
The first entry displayed will be a link to "ERROR LCD: Error Code 5C10" -- click the link
Three new links will eventually display:
  • Press ON/OFF switch to reset the multifunction device
  • Removing paper jams MP800R / MP830 / MP530
  • The MP830 may require repair

Click each link to see if the solution provided is appropriate to your situation.

My MP830 printer won't print.

5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width)
The unit is not homing, check for obstructions.

Canon Pixma MP830 error 5100

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.

Error 5100

Hi, This error indicates a carriage error
Check that the encoder strip ( the plastic strip that rungs behind the carriage ) is securely attached at both ends.If not, see if it has been broken, or if not just re-attach ih it onto the fixing lug
