Yes you can just unhook the wire and see if you have spark then, only thing is if it is the kill switch then you will have to replace it or you won't be able to shut your mower off unless you choke it but that will eventually wash the oil from cylinder causing premature cylinder wear, hope this helps you

I have a model 20333 recycler, with an ignition switch (small red toggle switch that kills the engine). One wire runs to the muffler shield as a ground, the other runs up to the top of the engine. The wire that runs to the top of the engine was pinched and shorting to ground, the result of shoddy construction. I gave that wire a firm yank, and it pulled free from the pinch point that was causing the short. Problem solved.

Have a self-starting, self propelled toro lawn mower about 5 years old, I ran it out of gas by accident & now it won't start

It seems to be an obstruction in your fuel delivery system. Get a can of ether and a spray a short burst of it into the breather area near the carburetor, if the mower starts up and then stalls out, then you may need to get your carburetor serviced.

Toro self propelled rear mower recycler.. starts and runs fine..Then stops if you do not keep the propulsion in gear

I would say that something inside the mechanism that engages the self-propelled action has broken. When you release the lever, (most of the way), that keeps the S.P. action moving, it's suppose to flip the action off but keep the motor running. And when you release this same lever all the way, it acts as a kill switch. If your wheels never disengage, then I would look at the mechanism spoke of above.

If you hear this mechanism click when you release this lever, this is good and it's not broken. Then you may have grass and junk clogged up under the cover where the front wheel is. This would also keep it from disengaging.

Good Luck!

My toro self propelled lawn mower won't roll backwards... the wheels are locked up

My Toro Pace Master self propelled 22" 6.75 mower will not move by itself. I can push the mower and cut. It does start with no problem. I have a cable on left side of the mower that extends to the top of the handle broken off at the top of the mower and is loose. Is there a way to check to see if this is why it will not self propel. It attaches to the push handle that does I push down to propel the mower. Any suggestions?

Toro Personal Pace self propel problem.

Your self-propel is probably belt driven. Belts can make an awfully lot of noise when unhappy. Possible it has rolled over and is running on the wrong side of the belt or is worn and just needs replaced. Hope this helps.,
