The only filter/screen I am familiar with is the one in the hoses the supply hot and cold water to your machine. They should be checked once in a while but I have never found much in them.

Remove door from washing machine, there' screws back side to remove and replace new glass very simple indeed.

It seems that your problem is with the lid switch and it should be replaced. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. You have to raise the top of the washer to get to the switch. Good luck!
