Sounds like a broken zoom switch to me. Sorry, but there's nothing much you can do about it. You will have to give it to a camera technician, because it's most likely a hardware problem and the camera has to be disassembled to see what's what. They are small mechanical switches and they use to break sometimes. Sand shouldn't affect it, unless some sand got inside the switch itself (don't see this often).
I have repaired more than 1000 cameras and seen many various problems, so I can imagine. ;-)
