My Miele 500 Novotronic washing machine is filling up with water and then after a few minutes the rinse light starts flashing while the main wash light is still on. The rinse stops flashing for a minute then starts up again. Then the machine drains the water with the rinse light still flashing and the finish light goes on with the rinse light still flashing.
My w830 is doing exactly the same thing.
I am usually pretty good at fixing these sort of things so if/when I solve it I will post back here.
I think it is a motor fault - most likely the motor brushes are worn out.
I have done mine today. It was the motor brushes. It is quite easy to replace them, they naturally wear down over time and Miele have designed the machine well to make it a simple process.
Do not attempt this if you are not familiar with working on electrical appliances. Call in a technician.
(my machine is a W830. Yours may be a little different but the basics should be similar.)
You need a screwdriver which takes torx bits, and a Torx T-15 bit.
Use disposable rubber gloves on your hands, the motor gets very dirty.
1. Disconnect machine from electricity.
2. Remove detergent drawer. Red button inside the drawer releases it.
3. open front panel - three screws around the deterent drawer opening, three bolts around (inside) the porthole opening, release a clip at lower left front of panel. The whole front of the machine will hinge to the right - aren't Miele's clever?
4. the motor is inside, under the drum. You see plastic cover with Miele stamped in it, and a row of wire connectors about ten wires long. (a 2,a 5 and a 3.) Pry off the connectors, make note which one goes where. Undo the screws to remove the sound reducing motor cover and pull the cover off. (2 or 3 screws)
Then undo the screws for the brush holder assembly on the back of the motor - a plastic piece across the back of the motor - 4 or 5 screws. The brush holder wil pull offf the back - it may be a little stiff to get off as it has some electrical terminals in it which plug in to the motor.
5.Now you have the brush holder in your hand. It will probably be filthy with black carbon dust. Inside you can see the two carbon brushes which are spring loaded to rub inside the motor. (the section they rub on is called the commutator.) You can take the ssembly to a Miele spare parts place and get a new pair of brushes. The old ones clip out of the holder and the new ones clip in. Use a dry rag to wipe out any carbon dust from the brushholder assembly.
6. You refit the brush holder assembly to the motor. It might be a little dificult to refit, as the new brushes are longer than the worn out ones and you need to press them back into their spring loaded holders as you push it up to the motor. Also the brush holder has three electrical connectors moulded in to the plastic, two one side and one the other side. You have to watch that they slot in to the mating connectors in the motor.
7. The rest of the process is a reverse of dismantling - put back the screws, refit the soundproof motor cover and screws, refit the wire connectors to the motor in the same position they were before, close the front panel and refit the screws and bolts exactly where they came from. Refit the detergent drawer, check itall over for mistakes and left over parts, then cross your fingers, plug it in, test it and hope it doesn't go bang.

Same - there's a company in Denmark which does brushes - you have to hunt them down on the web. The brushes come in a brass slider and spring, and sit in a rubber cage. Make sure you don't throw away any bits of the old brushes as you might need to reuse the old rubber cage.
Another solution (if you have the rubber cage) is to move the brushes along a bit and bend the metal tabs on the brass slider. That will give you a contact again - the machine will work for a few weeks or so, which gives you time to order the new brushes.
One other tip: open the front and check the plug that connects into the motor is properly seated. Sometimes in my machine the plug works loose and the motor either doesn't turn or only turns one way. It's a similar symptom to worn brushes, but of course much easier to cure (just push the plug back home) so try that first!

Mr gizmos solution is correct however on my Miele W842 I found it easier to turn m/c completly udside down remove motor and replace the brushes with the motor on the bench it was nearly impossible when I tried to do it throgh the front opening door.
Thanks to Mr Gizmo for providing some good direction for me on how to fix the flashing rinse light and 3 dashes on the display with my Miele W526 machine. Most folks say the most common cause is the motor brushes so I took faith and bought some locally before investigating the probelm further. The machine is around 7 years old so with daily use brush wear was likely.
I am posting this because I could not find any description of the process relating to the W526. Its different from the W830 in many aspects. You can also use this to change a seal and do some cleaning of pipes etc as well.
1. Like all Miele's, these machines are designed to be serviced, which is good. Most servicing can be done from the front, meaning you don't even have to pull the machine out of its surrounds. First of all, switch off power and remove the plug. I found a powerful torch (or flashlight for the US folks) very useful to have to hand.
Remove the front cover: Open the glass door by pulling on the orange tab behind the filter door. Remove the one 10mm bolt below the door. Remove the spring-loaded steel band which holds the seal in place with some long nosed pliers, and pull away the seal from the front of the machine. Remove the kickplate at the bottom which is retained by two plastic clips at left and right along the top edge. Slide in a screwdriver to gently prise down the clips and pull off the kickplate (see photo). Under the kickplate remove the two steel retaining bars at left and right held in by two torx screws. Then lift the front cover away at the bottom and slide down so it clears the controls cover at the top. Unplug the connector for the door release and put the front cover to one side (note it is not hinged like other Miele covers).
2. The motor is at bottom right under the drum with a white plastic cover over it. Prise out the 3 connectors, as far as I could see they can only go back in one way. Remove the two torx screws and pull off the cover, which has large locating plastic lug on the left at the back which you need to pull on separately. Pull the cover away and park it away from the motor.
3. On the front of the motor is a white nylon cover which houses the brushes. Remove the 4 torx screws and pull off the front cover which will expose the brush housing underneath, there is a plastic retaining clip in the middle which you need to squeeze, but it should come away fairly easily. Removing the brush housing underneath is tricky, it will pull off but there are two long spade-type terminals on far left and right of the housing which are a push-fit into the motor. Get your fingers behind the left and right of the housing and ease it off, note it will be quite stiff. Now you can work on this out of the machine to change the brushes.
4. Turn over the housing and you will see the plastic retainers for the brushes, you remove the brushes by squeezing the clips, lifting off the plastic 'lid' and pulling out the brushes. The brush terminals were tough to pull out of the housing, use a pair of long nose pliers and pull! I broke one but its not a problem as the new brushes come with a new terminal connector. I found that the brushes I was supplied with had a different red rubber cover than the ones in the machine, but that the metal part and the brush itself was the same. I simply cut the rubber from the new brush and, after cleaning the current rubber put it over the metal assembly. A great tip here, the new brushes come squeezed back into their metal housing, they are designed that way. Try pushing them out and back in, you will see they stay back in their metal tube against the spring. When you put the new ones in, leave the brushes squeezed back into the metal tube, or else it will be very difficult to get them over the motor spindle when you refit the housing onto the motor. Once the new brushes are in the housing, refit the housing to the motor. Again, make sure the push-fit terminals are aligned with their sockets on either side. I found I had to remove the tub drain rubber hose so I could see to make sure they were located on the left hand side. When pushing the housing back, I used long nosed pliers (see photo) to keep the terminal from pushing back out and damaging the flimsy foil-type connectors. When the housing is flush with the motor and you have verified the four terminals are connected, replace the four torx screws. Now remember to use small screwdriver or punch to push the brushes onto the motor spindle (see photo).
5. You are pretty much done now , just reverse the process to re-assemble.
i have the w2104 which had the flashing rinse light which turned out to be the brushes.. your directions and and explanation worked perfectly.. couldnt have done it without them ..would have ended up removing the motor from the machine

MrGizmo, Like Steve, I have a W842. I am waiting for replacement brushes to arrive but I was having trouble removing the sound-reducing motor cover completely. I could move it to one side to get the unit containing the brushes out, but I doubt I will be able to get the unit back in. I can pull harder on the motor cover, but am not sure if there are further screws at the back - and am fearful it might snap - Does anyone know if it can be removed from the front without removing the motor? Thanks in advance.

I have miele w404 plus. Same problem - flashing rinse light and wash program stops. However, i tried the drain and spin cycle and the machine works. The drum turns and spins as it should. I have motor brushes on order and my fingers are crossed that they will fix the problem. Will post an update once i have tried the new brushes.
Hi, I have the same problem with my Miele W828 front loader. Loads the water and then the rinse light flashes for a while and stops. Then the water is pumped out and the machine stops.
The brushes in the motor are OK.
I think that the problem is in the electronic board which costs A$390 to buy (parts only). I think it may only be a relay on the board (worth a few dollars?) that is faulty. But which one? Any ideas?
The shock absorbers were also not good and the Miele assistance told me on the phone that it is a common problem that when the shocks fail they cause something in the electronic board to fail (vibrations? stop and start to balance load?). Any help welcome
hey there I tried this repair but the old brushes are ok, I have no idea now, so the machine will fill then drain and flash rinse on "wash" or drian then flash rinse on spin.
when Istart any programme it works for a minute and then jumps to rinse for about 15 seconds and then to finish the rinse light keeps flashing
motor is ok and control board ok have you any other suggestions
