I washed some very dirty baseball pants on Whitest whites, with bleach and Tide detergent. Not only are the pants still "tan" from the dirt but all the other whites are also "tan." I ran them through a second wash (without the b-ball pants) and they are discolored. Any suggestions, for 1) getting them clean and 2) for what caused this in the first palce?

Try this: Soak the stained clothes in a solution of 1 quart of warm water, 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar for 15 minutes. Then, rinse with water.
If this doesn't get everything out, then wash in warm water (or what the fabrics allow) using a color safe bleach and detergent.

The problem is that there was more dirt than what your detergent could handle. If you have a really dirty clothes item in the future, get as much of the dirt off using a vacuum or by soaking alone as you can. Then wash the item in warm water with detergent and color safe bleach.

SOURCE: Awful smell in drum of washing machine

My friend told me of someone who researched this problem, and it is because we are using liquid detergent. Switch to a granular high efficiency detergent. Before you start using it, you must run through a mixture of about one cup Clorox and two cups vinegar through the washer, using the Sanitary setting. I am actually on-line now trying to research the exact proportions of Clorox and vinegar when I ran across your problem.

SOURCE: Water Softner Dispense wont empty - Kenmore Elite Quiet Pak 4 HE3t

I'm sure you heard a small motor running from time to time during a cycle. That moves an "arm" which sends water to the different chambers during a cycle. Fabric softener is dispensed when water goes to that chamber and dilutes the fabric softener. That chamber then empties by a siphoning action.
If you want to narrow down the problem a little to help trouble shoot -- put some wet rags in and run the Rinse and Spin cycle with some fabric softener. If the softener is not dispensed, then you know that the water isn't being sent to that chamber properly.
If you are intrepid enough to take the top off your washer, do that and see if the arm appears to be moving during a normal cycle. Maybe the arm got dislodged or broken during the move.
If water isn't being diverted properly, I think this calls for a real repair person.

Ken more washer leaves dirty marks on clothes

Pull the agitator out and clean the inside of it and the area of the tub that it covers. A buildup of crud won't be removed by simply washing out the machine. Rinsing out a frying pan will get a lot of the dirt out but, it must be properly washed to get it all.

I just viewed a bunch of complaints about chlorine bleach getting dumped on the subsequent load, but did not see a true root cause response. 1st question: When you use chlorine bleach with the whitest...

chlorine bleach is a highly corrosive addition to laundry that is not necessary... try Borax and Hot water. If the clothes sat in the Bleach for the entire wash cycle it would damage them and shorten the life of the clothing fibers considerably...

When I wash dark clothes, I get lint on them or white spots

The lint is from some other garment in the same wash.

Do the white spots wipe off or are they "bleach stains"?

Assuming they wipe off, then your detergent is not dissolving all the way. Make sure the water is hot enough. Even cold water needs to be a minimum temperature and during the cold months the water can get too cold. Try warm or mix hot and cold by changing back-and-forth on the control for the wash temperature. Also, try putting the detergent in first or buying a higher grade of detergent (i.e. Tide). Best of luck.

Washer is not cleaning the clothes. Use Tide he with soft water, whites with bleach and clothes are dirty looking. White socks still dark shade on bottoms.Washer is a Neptune 5500

Probably not a fault of the washer. Where (city/state) are you buying your detergent? The reason I ask is that in the western US they have banned certain ingredients in detergents. The results aren't pretty. So far, they still sell the good stuff in Idaho if you have a way to get it.

Usage of HE detergents

The best he soap I have seen yet is all, he is high effieciency low suds soap. The rule of thumb for liquid he soap is 2 Tbl for every 1 Tbl of softener. Powder can be used but is not good on pumps and build up in tubs. If you have a water softener you can use 25% less soap. Still with powder you need about a 1/4 cup per load to equal a 2 Tbl liquid variety. Suds damage pump impellers, seals and hoses from expansion and that is it on the reason "why to use he".

Usage of HE detergents

ONLY USE HE DETERGENT, The repairman just left my house today, 24 August 2009, my washer had water spewing from the detergent tray, and soaked my floors:PROBLEM, my hoses were filled with NON-HE detergent, the repairman was really nice and told me that it could have automatically voided my warranty, but he wrote it up "differently" and smacked my hand. He showed me the hose and if was just clogged terribly, he ran the spin and rinse cyle and I thought the suds would never go away, but they finally did.

HE ALL THE WAY from now on
