I have a toro 22in recycler lawn mower. Attempted to start for first use of the season and it will not start. Plenty of battery, gas, but no spark, are there points on this engine? I pulled the top cover off the engine, on old engines I pulled the flywheel to get to the points, not sure what to do next?

Did mice get in there during the Off Season? Check for Mouse nest or rust on Coil and magnet section of Flywheel.

SOURCE: Toro Lawn Mower Won't Start

this is a very common problem with these toro mowers. the needle valve in the bowl of the carb. is plugged up with dirt or varnish from the fuel. just under the primer bulb there is the carb bowl. it has a nut under it that holds it on remove the bowl and make sure fuel flows constantly while the bowl is off. push up on the float to stop the gas flow. this could be messy and dangerous. careful with the gas. its flammable. best solution is to remove the carb and soak it overnight in a parts cleaner like gunk. caution small parts inside. this happins every year on mine no matter what i do. seems like the orifice is so small it clogs easily. good luck

SOURCE: Toro 22in Lawn mower. Loud gear noise when try to engage drive.

sounds like the transmission engagment lever is broken or cracked. if you can reach the lever see if it has play when the cable is tight. you will need two people one to hold the lever and one to check the lever. easiest way is to invert the mower and have someone hold the lever on the handle. do not try this wioth mower running. the lever should be tight with the transmission lever engaged.another note here the clutch lever will not feel solid but kinda spongy. usually caused by overtightening the cable.

Problem is in the rear pinion gears on rear axle and the design of the axle itself. I have a 2005 model 20041 had the same problem. I found a Toro dealer that had the fix.The problem is creadted by the fact that there is too much "play" in the rear axle. You have to limit that play by installing shims, or washers First, but the 2 new rear pinion gears for the rear axle. While you're at it, you may as well buy 2 new rear wheels because the "grinding" has worn the sprockets on the reas r wheels.Next, get 2 "fender washers", 1/2" ID and about 1" OD. I found it easier to turn the mower over and set it on saw horses to work on it.( drain the gas and oil first). Remove both rear wheels, pinion gears and all the washers etc. (caution - keep all parts from one side together - do not pile all parts together - keep them seperated by wheel - the reason is I believe there is one more washer/shim on the right side than on the left). Now to put everything back together, find a spot on the axle where the washer will fit in between the standard stuff.Install new pinion gears and replace the rest of the washers/shims just as they came off. INstall new wheels and you'll be good as new!

SOURCE: Tecumseh LV195EA Starts then dies.

If the engine is running at all then your sensors should be ok. It sounds to me like its starving for fuel? Once the engine runs out of prime then it starves. Does the fuel system have a shut off valve? How about an inline fuel filter? Either could be plugged. I think what you will need to do is remove the carb from the engine and check to see if its clean and if fuel from the tank is flowing easily to it. Once you have the carb off the engine, remove the bowl from the carb by removing the bottom bowl nut. Use a small can or an ash tray to hold the small pieces. Shake the float back and forth to see if there is anything in it. Some floats are plastic and some are tin. If there is any liquid inside the float there is your problem. Otherwise continue on with your diagnosis by using a bread bag wire, minus the outer covering, and a little jet spray to probe and clean the internal jets. Pay particular attention to the center main jet which will have a small perpendicular air bleed hole near the bottom and to the air vent hole that is on the face of the carb where the air cleaner mounts. Any tiny piece of chaff will cause these to plug. For reassembly, the inlet needle slides into the float, and they are held to the casting by a pin. You can push the pin out with a small screwdriver and then grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers to get access to the float. Finally, check the O ring for cracks that goes between the bowl and the casting. This is an easy job, just take your time. Lawnboys are one of the better machines.

SOURCE: I have a 22in recycler lawn mover. the recoil

There is a safety brake on the handle that MUST be held down to start the engine. You must squeeze the safety agaist the handle to operate the mower. If not you will not be able to start the mower.

If your holding the safety mechanism and it is still locked then either the cable has become detached or... borken. Check to make sure the cable is connected to the safety mechanism. If it is and it still does not release then you should in all honesty contact Toro for the nearest warranty repair center.

A dirty air filter is a common cause of this. Give it a look. Otherwise a replacement carb would be the route to take.

Your battery probably did not survive the storage period and now will not accept or hold a charge. Off hand I would say that you need to replace the battery for now, and when the mower is put into storage again, charge the battery from time to time.

Hi. Get a can of starter fluid from your local auto parts store and a helper. Squirt a little into the air intake, start it and have your helper continue to squirt more fluid to keep it running until you clean the gunk from your carburator. J.
