We have a FRS28XGCW. The freezer started freezing the ice cream too cold/hard. I set the control to the warmest setting. No effect. Now the refrigerator is too cold. I set it to warmest. No effect. I even turned the freezer control to off with no effect. This side by side is 13 years old. Is it time to replace or is it repairable? Thanks in advance, Jeff Howard

Thanks for trying. I had already tried cutting off the power. I let it sit for 20 minutes the first time and 2 hours the second. I even have the freezer in the off position but it is blowing constantly.

Freezer in my refrigerator is not freezing some things like ice cream and ice pops solid

Get a freezer dial thermometer (about $5-10 at grocery or box store) and check the temperature, then adjust the freezer (NOT refrigerator) setting dial (usually just inside the top of the cold cut section) a number at a time colder and see how that changes the temperature.
Vegetables and ice cubes freeze hard at about 28-30 degrees F, so freezers are usually set at about 5-10 degrees F, and not above 15 for safety. However, ice cream that is high in cream content generally will be runny to about 25, and soft down to about 0-10, so you may need to set your freezer as low as zero degrees F.
The comment on cleaning the coils is very important - you should do that about yearly, or more often if you have shedding pets. Be gentle with them - you do not want to bend them, as they carry refrigerant fluid, and repairs are expensive. The coils can be under or on the back of the unit, and it is best to not only vacuum them out, but also to blow them out if possible before vacuuming - with compressed air hose if you have it, else with a cleaned-out shop vac on blow setting. Be sure after you blow it out that the fan (usually accessible from the back by removing a cardboard cover after disconnecting power) is not blocked by a clump of lint - it should spin freely. The compressor (roundish tank with wires and tubing coming out of it) should also be blown / brushed off, as lint accumulation makes it run hotter, which reduces freezing capacity.
Also - try putting your ice cream as low in the freezer unit as possible (cold air sinks), and as far back as possible so it does not warm up as much when you open the door. Side-by-sides are bad for this, because all the cold air pours out every time you open the door. You might also try packing something around the ice cream to reduce the effect of opening the door - like bags of frozen vegetables, for instance, or even a wrapped layer of cardboard (although that will also make it take longer to initially freeze).

What setting do I use to make the freezer freeze food

When you are freezing something, set your freezer on its highest setting. However, if you are going to leave your freezer empty for a long time, you should change the setting to a lower one. Here's a great tip for ice cream: place a tub of ice cream in a ziplock bag before putting it in the freezer; it prevents freezer burn. You know when your ice cream gets so cold, it's hard to scoop out? Doing this stops that, it's keeps the ice cream just soft enough for easy scooping!

Fridge Ices Up Even on the Warmest Setting (Freezer Working Fine)

Sounds like the cold control has stuck . Unplug the two wires from the cold control and plug them together. Turn one wire over and plug it into the other. away from the cold control.
If it runs then that cold control is the problem.

I have a kenmore upright freezer and can't remember which setting it should be on. It has coldest 1 2 3 etc.

I keep min two notches from the coldest setting.A great way to check where you should set yous,is ice cream.Put an open container of ice cream in the freezer, and turn the freezer to coldest. The next day try to scoop the ice cream. If the ice cream is hard the freezer is too cold.Adjust the freezer two notches ,and try the ice cream the next day.Repeat till you are happy with the hardness of the ice cream. It should be easy to scoop but not too soft.

My refrigerator is too cold. It is on the warmest setting on both the freezer and refrig yet the lower draws freeze. Got any ideas? And yes the compressor is not running all of the time.

by setting the freezer control to the warmest setting you allow the maximun amount of air into the refrigerator. set the freezer control to the center location.

Hi. My fridge is about a month old. Although we have the freezer set at 8 degrees (the warmest it will set to), the freezer is extremely cold. Ice cream becomes rock hard (we can't even cut it with a...

This is not an adjustment issue, this is a malfunction issue. If you have a thermometer that you can place in the freezer, as opposed to any temperature readings from the freezer itself, your temps would normally be around 0 degrees F. At the warmest freezer settings, you should be around 10 degrees, which would make your ice cream very scoopable. I would contact the store you purchased it at or Samsung for a refrigerator repair service as soon as possible before they tell you its no longer covered under warranty.

What setting between 1-9 should I set Freezer to prevent freezer burn

Good day,
Freezer burn is due to too cold a temperature in the freezer compartment. Nominal for that machine is 4 to 5.
However only time will tell you what is acceptable, since freezer burn can occur even at a warmer setting, if the product is stored a long time.
1 is warmest and 9 is coldest. I would lean to a slightly warmer setting to start off but that will create a trade off, since it would reduce the speed of ice production, and with especially high quality ice cream, possibly ice cream being too soft.
Patience is your friend here. But what you want is there.

Amana ABB2224DES - 5 years old - freezer is not keeping ice cream frozen it is mushy - the freezer setting has been set on 6 for a long time

Check temp. should be around 0. If not check to make sure condensor fan motor is working. Check condensor for lint. Do not put ice cream in door shelfs this is the warmest point in freezer. if has a icemaker, check to see if ice in bucket has a wet look or dry look. Wet is a not cold enough. dry is cold enough. If refrig is cycling of and on and temp is 0 , ice dry... possible bad thermastate/ sensor.

Freezer cold but not freezing

Check the settings for the freezer control. Refrigerator temperature control normally controls the run time of the compressor. if the freezer control is set to low the refrigerator temperature will be fine and the freezer will be warmer. Setting the freezer control to a colder setting will hold back more cold air in the freezer and reduce the air volume supplied to the refrigerator. Check and make sure the condenser coil is clean.
