HI Mike.
THIS IS ALL I COULD FIND OUT.
E40 relates to the door being left open when the programme is started, it maybe that the latch was not pushed over when the door was shut.
to solve the problem get another switch.
hope this helps you.

the two possibles are faulty door lock or water still in the machine. the error code should tell you which. go to AEG and their troubleshooting page will give you the codes.
you have a hole in the rubber boot seal and need to change it,also i've seen a buildup of detergent and hair stuck on the bottom side of the front door, when the door is closed the water was traveling down the pieces of hair and leaking through the bottom of the door, but if it's leaking under where the pump is and it's not the pump or hoses it's the boot seal.open the door and pull open the boot seal and run your fingers all around until you find the hole
When was the last time you changed the brushes on the motor? Check the brushes by removing the motor and then the brushes. The brushes should have at least 15mm left on them. Use compressed air and blow out the motor.
type in ' AEG lavamat 538 ' into the top right hand address bar on your pc and you will find links that will give you all the instruction manuals you need... AEG is at the lower end of the list....
Good luck

Wait for at least 3 minutes after the wash is complete, to open the door; do not force the door. The door will not open immediately on the wash being completed.
It seems that your problem is with the lid switch and it should be replaced.
The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. You have to raise the top of the washer to get to the switch.
Good luck!
