Tip the machine back remove the belt try to turn the drive pulley manually . sorry the larger pulley in the centre. if you can turn it counter clockwise and feel the inner drum moving then the thrust bearing is ok. if not you may need to replace it.Also a bad lid switch can cause this problem.

hey good for you thats an eazy one .pull the washer out abit and then tip so the top resting on wall behind.be careful dose not slip out from under but ihave done it a hundred times as a repairman.before replacing the belt inspect the motor pulley, its plastic and they do melt.also inspect the pump pulley making sure it turns freely and the spot welds are not broken joinning the pulley to the pump shaft...........other wise just spin the old belt off and spin the new belt on.the belt goes on a total of three pulleys .thats it if you need any other help you can email . God bless ,tom
SOURCE: Maytag Washing Machine Cycles Out of Sync with Dial
ive fixed lots off washers over the years[15,000 service calls] and was careful while taking parts off if i wasn't fulmilure with that model, but most timers and knobs have a key way so the knob can only go on one way.if thats not true for you, try this.turn the timer shaft till the washer is at the end of the wash cycle.[finished the load,it would be the final spin ,maybe five minutes long.when thats done the timer advances to off]now knowing that thats an off position set on your knob and then manuly turn it to the off position of the next cycle if it wont run you did it. if not you will have to go to the end of that cycle and remove knob and set to next notch in the knob, until you find the sweet spot.hope this helps God bless, tom
