We have an older (c. 2000) Sony receiver that was not changed when the rest of the sound system and components was installed in 2002. For years we have had a problem with the sound blasting loudly than going to a whisper. At this point it often goes out completely. If you ''bang'' the top of the receiver box, it will come back on. Any suggestions?

The PSLX2 does not have a built-in preamp. It is counting on the receiver to have one. Your receiver does not. Older receivers had a dedicated PHONO input that had an inline preamp that raised the level of the audio to the same as other components (cd players, etc.) Without that preamp, you will not have a usuable signal level. If you get a newer turntable like the pslx300, it will have a preamp built into it.
Doesn't matter what order the 3.5mm are wired up in. As long as one connects to another in a daisy chain, data will jump from one to the other to give remote operation or auto source changing

It sounds as if the amplifier within the unit itself is dead, especially if the speakers AND headphones don't work. It most audio receivers, the amplifier is wired separately from the rest of the circuitry, meaning that the unit could appear to be working properly, but no sound will be produced. I would just replace it, especially if it is an older unit. The parts (if even still available) and labor could be well above what a brand new one would cost.
If you have set the component output on the ps3 for high def,ie 720p or 1080i and do not get a picture it sounds like the component input is not high def enabled on your amp, change the setting on ps3 to standard 576 output,or put picture into tv then sound into amp if you want to run 720p or 1080i.

Check to be sure that none of the buttons are stuck on. With the unit off, press each of the buttons. You should be able to feel the button engage. If they all feel like they are working, the internal switch itself may be shorted in the closed position.
Preferential Quality Connections in order of higher quality are: 1st>HDMI, 2nd>DVI, 3rd>Component/S-Video, 4th>Composite Video. Make sure you only use the surround setting on 1 of the 2 components, which ever is of better quality. If you use them both it WILL sound like mud. (older receiver-newer tv>probably tv) but you must connect all tv audio channel outputs to receiver. (newer receiver-older tv>receiver would be better) Receivers also tend to have more wattage to drive larger speaker loads than most TVs. The key is to turn off the surround and SRS functions on the TV if you use the surround decoders on the receiver. Either way you use it, make sure you use the set-up feature to balance the outputs of the various channels for either source (the levels of the two will probably be very different).
