With the engine OFF, reach underneath and locate the plug for the blade clutch and unplug it. Start up the mower and see if the blades are turning. If they are still turning with the clutch unplugged, REPLACE THE CLUTCH

Pto spis all the time on my 1989 john deere 420

Are the blades turning? If they are not, this is normal. The PTO is an electro magnetic clutch that engages when you apply electricity via the PTO switch. When it is disengaged, the bearings and top portion of the clutch will turn because it is coupled to the engine. If the blades ARE turning then you have a bad clutch and will need to repair or replace it

John deere 2010 tractor. pto grinds and wont engage

The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.
