Before confirm transformer fault, load batteries and see whether it works. After loading batteries, pull out its AC cord from its AC socket at it back side. With AC cord connected at the back of the set, battery supply won't connected to the set. There is a cut - off switch at the AC socket. Only after removing the AC cord, the set will work on battery.
Try this. If it works with battery, make sure that transformer or internal mains fuse has blown out.

There are a couple of things that come to mind, poor solder connections on the main board, or the audio output ic has a thermal related issue causing it to break down under load, a tricky problem to prove.

Not knowing what country you're in...

Does it LOOK generic? Then it is. Take it down to an electrical supply store or Radio Shack or look around online. "generic power cord"
