without seeing it, they usual have enough lead length to allow the cover to be moved so you can get to the wire, The switch usually has a blade with a slide connector that can be removed.

This is a complicated problem. There are several ways of doing it, but the most important thing is to make sure that the unit is properly grounded, and that there is no possibility of back feeding the power lines. You must have a positive disconnect between your panel and the generator. This can be through an approved isolation switch or and approved transfer switch.
You also want to make sure you do not overload the generator

Recommended Service Schedule: 600 mi. initial; 4000 mi. minor; 7500 mi. major; 3500-mi. intervals thereafter

Have you checked to ensure the GFI outlet is not tripped?

Reset / tickled? There are resistors and diodes in the end of the alternators rotor (the bit in the middle that spins) If these look ok visually then change the capacitor which is a barrel shaped object usually with 4 prongs on the end. Without a capacitor the genset will not produce a voltage.
