Engine will not run with no spark or a weak spark. Continuity test will only reveal that the winding is not open, not if you are producing a weak spark that will not jump the spark plug gap.
The charging system is under the flywheel, but first check the 2 wires are connected at the side of the motor, they might be black and white at the conector.
white smoke means that there is water in the fuel air mixture during combustion. a bluish white smoke means oil is being burned during combustion. take another look and make sure which one it is. since all mowers ive seen are air cooled the only way water can be getting in the fuel air mixture is through the gas cap. check your gas tank and gas can for water. may be best to empty both and start over with fresh fuel
It sounds like 2 different problems. One is that your battery is shot. It needs to be replaced, and to keep that from happening prematurely, put a smart trickle charger on it over the winter because lead/acid batteries lose 1% of their charge per day, making them virtually discharged in 3 months. This causes damage that they cannot recover from.
The second problem sounds like either that you are not tending to the choke properly or it needs the carburetor thoroughly cleaned because of clogged jets. Before winter storage, be sure that any fuel in the system has been treated with STA-BIL to prevent it from breaking down and forming deposits.
If you have the technical know-how, get a carb rebuild kit (usually about $20) and remove, clean, and reassemble the carb using the new gaskets and parts. If not, bring it in for repair.
