Northstar 5500 - no power output, but motor runs fine

Motor runs fine, but the generator is not giving power to the plugs...

  • pwetherbee Jul 02, 2009

    ProHydroRace,

I don't see an Output Switch on the panel...any other suggestions. There's a plug in the back of the panel and I have made sure it was plugged all the way in. I also opened the panel box but did not see any ON/OFF switch. There are reset buttons on the front of the panel, but they are both pressed in. When I have had an overload in the past, these I have reset and the plugs worked fine.

    ProHydroRace,

I did not see an on/off switch. I also opened up the panel and did not see one there either. There are reset buttons on the front panel and I have had to use these to reset before. Any other suggestions?

North star 5500 generator works fine but on voltage output

It's very common for the connectors between the alternator and power outlets to come loose on these. Give them a check and tighten as necessary.

How much output can i get from northstar 5500 ppg generator

there are two things in generator out put
one is max out put which is 5500 in your case and another is rated out put which should be about 4500 in your generator Max out put should be used only for a little time say half an hour otherwise generator is suppose to run on rated load or rated out put which is 4.5 kva or 4500watts in your set that also when you are in Ideal conditions means if you are at the sea level if you are above in altitude you can calculate that engine will loose its efficiency at the rate of 3% after every 1000 feet altitude inthat way you can calculate how much rated load you can put on the generator

I found out that the gasoline motor was turning too fast so I had to turn down the speed of the motor with the adjustment screw.

There is absolutely no voltage output. What

My generator has a switch to turn on the output, you must turn it "ON" to get power.

Low output from NorthStar 5500PPG

There are a few scenarios that can cause this.

1) The extension cord that you are using is too long / too light of a guage. Try a heavier extension cord, or plug directly into the generator.

2) The alternator has lost its "residual magnetism" and may need to be reflashed. Consult Northstar for instructions and details.

3) The voltage regulator (actually a simple capacitor) may be "weak"

4) The diode for field winding may be bad.

You can get a copy of your manual here, page 40 has diagram and part numbers.
