    USB Write Protection
Hi, I am trying to copy files from my pc to a USB stick and when I drag the file (which is saved on my desktop) to the USB window is says that the file can not be copeid and I need to remove the write protection or use another disk.

Does anyone know a way around this so I can drag the required file straight on to my USB stick?

    Thanks in Advance!

OK – after an hour or so of faffing around :knock: , I think that I have found a possible solution How to remove write protect on my usb flash drive? - tongue.gif . The problem seems to be something to do with Microsoft&How to remove write protect on my usb flash drive? - dead.gifSP2 dead.gif !
Here’s what worked for me (sorry for the Idiot’s Guide approach, but I used to :hotbounce hate it :hotbounce when I used forums and couldn’t understand what the technobabble meant!):

- Start > Run > type ‘regedit’ (without the speachmarks) > Enter
- Single-click on ‘My Computer’ > File > Export > save it to the Desktop (Always best to have a backup!!)
- Go to the following:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDeviceP olicies
*There seems to be some spaces here in 'StorageDevicePolicies' in the text above, there shouldn't be, OK*
- Double click on the string ‘WriteProtect’ and change the ‘Value Data’ box to ‘0’
- Then: File > Export > save somewhere useful as something like ‘StorageDevicePolicies001.reg’
- You also need to do this for the strings in any folders called ‘ControlSet***’ (* = any Digit, i.e. 001, 002) – for example: Everything is the same, just change ‘CurrentControlSet’ to ‘ControlSet***’
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\StorageDevicePolic ies
*There seems to be some spaces here in 'StorageDevicePolicies' in the text above, there shouldn't be, OK*
- Save these to the same place as before as ‘StorageDevicePolicies00*’

The saves are in case it reverts at a later date, just double click (saying ‘yes’ to importing these to the registry) on all of the files and it will all work again!

Thanks to Fatbird

On my Memorex USB stick, there is a "Lock/Unlock" slide bar on the opposite end of USB port. It uses the symbols of a "lock" and an "open hasp lock" to show that the device is "locked" (write-protected) or "unlocked" or not write-protected. Got to believe other devices are similarly configured.
Hope this helps.

This the great solution... try low level format..

1. plug ur usb flash
2. run Formatter v2.9.0.9.exe
3. follow the instruction and wait for the format (might take 5min for 4GB)
4. after complete, may the small volume (about 2MB...here the solution
5. plug your usb flash on other computer and format like regular (make sure u untick quick format) and click on "restore device defaults" then click format
6. now your usb flash drive was like a new one

>>>>DOWNLOAD FORMATTER CLICK HERE <<<<

PRESS YES IF IT WORK!!!

Try this...Go to http://www.apacer.com/en/support/downloads/Repair_v2.9.1.1.zip
(named “HT203 Handy Steno 2.0 Repair Tool” - or XXXX Repair Tool, for the software is model/manufacturer independent.)
Be careful to have only the flash drive you need to repair connected to your computer, as the software has no controls, and doesn’t even allow you to choose which drive you want to format - seems like it assumes the first removable drive available is the one you want to format. If the format "fails" then quit the tool , then try format in Winxp best of luck

Check under windows registry may it can help

Check out the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies.
The value 'WriteProtect' should be absent or set to '0'.

Hi, i have downloaded suggested downloads with no success, says usb flash not found, there is no switch on the micro flash card and the adapter card switch has been tried on unlock and half way, taped and neither did blowing fix anything. I don't have storagedevicespolicies or anything similar to that in regedit, XP, the reader reads other cards, am still getting the write protected speil. the micro card is new and has had nothing on it.

When i try to format my flash drive a message come like"unprotect first before you can format"...

why i did to format my flash drive is download the utility from http://www.apacer.com/en/support/downloads/Repair_v2.9.1.1.zi. Install it to my pc...then execute the program....it will take some time to format your flash drive...after some time a message will come like "formatting failed"...its ok. Safely remove the flash drive and again put the flash drive to your pc..then do the format again but in My Computer not from the utility.....formatting will be successful. Hope this work for all you guys!!!

  • Anonymous Aug 07, 2012

Not all memory stick have that switch. I guess the new ones doesn't seem to have those. I buy the 32GB and 64GB and none of my flash USB stick have that switch on it. I wish it was that easy.

So far, I have tried to format it with my Mac, Linux, Vista and XP but it still does not work.
The first time I formatted it with my Mac and re-formatted it in XP, and it works, but now it has reverted back to write protected again. Please help me!!!(It is sooooooooooooo frustrating)
Oh yes, my pendrive is a 16 GB TDKMedia Trans-It Drive USB device. The outside is smooth.(no switches)
I also need help on my other pendrive, which is also write protected. It is a Corsair Flash Voyager USB Device. And it is covered in rubber so I doubt the existence of ans switch. I even tried pressing it, but it is too hard to contian a hidden button. It has no shell but is coated with rubber. (and it can bounce).
I tried formatting with the website provided above, but it hangs and I had to restart my computer because it crashes. I also tried the regedit thing but my computer has no StorageDevicePolicies
folder.Please help me.

    1. Open Start Menu >> Run, type regedit and press Enter, this will open
    the registry
    editor.

    2. Navigate to the following path:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

    Note: If
    the registry
    key
StorageDevicePolicies does not exist, you will need to create it manually.
    3. Double click the key WriteProtect in the right window and set the value to 0 in the Value Data Box and press OK button
    4. Restart your computer and try copying files into your USB drives.

I am not a computer pro, so my knowledge is more practical.
I had the same problem with my USB, which I could not format, nor could I erase data. It dint have any switch as well.
After hours of fiddling with the hardware, I chanced upon to press the bottom of the drive on the broad side. There was a click sound and the hardware was ready to format and/or delete data.
What I feel is, there is a hidden push button below the outer shell at the lower side of the USB, which on/offs the write protect feature of the drive.

Almost ALL flash drives have a tiny little switch on them somwhere to turn write protect on and off. Look at the back end and on the sides (edges).

This happened to me with a cheap shuffle. I did hours of online searching and this one tip caught my eye and it worked for me. Make sure that your mp3 is not in the "pause" mode. I must have put in on pause my mistake and I wasn't able to do anything with it, play, copy music or delete. All I did was push my pause/play button once to get it to play mode and have had no problems. It was such an easy fix if you don't have the 'switch' on the side.

Well, try Editing registry / Download Repair / Low level formating / HP Drive key software / Format from command promp / OnLine Recovery / jfFormat / AlcorMP / Repair Neo etc. None of these works on my Transcend and HP 4gbs Pen Drives. Try.. You may be luckier than Me...

There is a tool in "Yamicsoft Windows Manager" that can solve the problem.
Just download the right version for your system, and go to USB section.

Than you for the solution #6, wich worked! it's all that easy, just "eject" the program protecting your UBS by righclicking it :') then remove the usb, and put it back again, and evrything will work smoothly

the easiest way by far i found was by ...
I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2, so this description applies only in that environment.
Centon's tech support suggested doing the following...
    Start->Settings->Control Panel
    Administrative Tools
    Computer Management
Under Storage in the left panel, click on Disk Management, wait a minute for Windows to do whatever it is doing,......
Locate the data stick/thumb drive/whatever-you-want-to-call it, in the right top windowand click on it.
    Right click
in the popup, click on "Delete Partition" -- make darn sure you are doing this to the RIGHT drive!!!!!
Right click again, and choose "Create Partition" (or was it format, I forget maybe it was both).
Now I had a working Centon device again :)
Too bad I RMA'ed the Sandisk and Memorex drives.. that cost them money they did not need to spend.
Note that this procedure will cause the erasure of all information you have on the device, so kiss your data good bye! but it beats waiting for a RMA to go through and come back.

Hi, i tried your solution, and i got to the part when you say 'delete partition' but when i right click it it doesn't even allow me to delete or anything to it. I have windows7 so maybe thats the problem,i don't know..

If anybody is helped by this information please drop a line.

SOURCE: how to remove write protect on my usb flash drive

just bought my flash drive and never used it because when I would try to save a file to it, I would get prompt that I need to format it first. When I tried to format my flash drive, it would prompt that the disk is write protected. How am I supposed to remove the write protected? Why is it write protected when there is nothing on my flash drive?

SOURCE: how to remove write protect on my usb flash drive

Maybe you are infected with a virus. Run CMD on rrun command or get to run the Windows Dos Prompt. Goto flash drive drive letter. Then type DIR/AH, this will show you list of hidden files in your flash drive usually if you get an autorun.inf you are infected with a virus. Type TYPE AUTORUN.INF with the space in between. This will show you the script if it will run an exe command usually untrusted one. Usually the autorun.inf and the linked exe is attributed to be hidden, system, and read only.

If the files in your flash drive is not so important you can try to delete the autorun.inf only. But you will gonna do this first. In its drive letter type ATTRIB -H -R -S AUTORUN.INF hit enter. Then type DEL AUTORUN.INF. trying to access the flash drive in windows screen you can get that something is cannot be found. But you could actually delete and load files into it. Or try to access the drive rightclicking it then select EXPLORE.

Hope this help. Post comments if this does not help.

There should be a very small slide switch along the edge of the card. Sliding this one way will lock (write protect) or unlock the card.
