Same thing happened to me, took watch to watch shop, they changed the battery and the chimes stopped working. Simple fix, the faceplate was put back on wrong. Unscrew the face plate and turn it upside down (or right side up depending on your POV) the circle on the inside of the faceplate will line up with the springs inside the watch and the chimes will start working again. If you have a pair of eyeglasses screw drivers, like I did, you can do this yourself.
mcdevito75 here, Most Dollar stores carry an eyeglass repair kit containing screws, screwdriver and a magnifying glass if you"d want to replace that screw your self, Or, you can see any eyeglass outlet in your area.
Take an eyeglass and carefully examine watch case back all the way around. You will find tiny groove or ''lip''. This is exact place where to insert blade and pry up. Rate me, plz.
Sorry, I don't have a solution, but I just wanted to share that I have had the same exact problem twice. But I got a watch repair place to replace the battery.
You have to open your watch and find movement number. Use an eyeglass as the numbers are very tiny. Number is pressed onto one of movement plates and shoud be letters ETA+number.
When this is done, visit your nearest watchmaker shop and ask for stem for movement ETA+number. Do not tell this is for Ebel or you will be charged accordingly to brand name.
There should be no problems for supplying ETA stem.
