Kenmore Front Load Washer Drive Belt Keeps rubbing up against Tub

Made adjustments on belt. After 2 or more washings, belt again starts rubbing against tub.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Verify that the drive pulley nut is locked down good and tight. If it's not, the pulley wobbles, throws the belt and causes other major damage to the tub shaft and seals.

Check the Vibration damper rods to be sure that...
1. They are there and mount is solid.
2. If they are broken in 1/2.
3. The plastic knuckle mounts are not missing/broken.
4. There is oil in the shock absorber/spring section of the rods.

Also - there are suspension springs on the bottom of the tub that could be broken and/or missing.

Replace/repair as necessary.

IF THIS IS A BRAND NEW INSTALLATION - be sure you hav removed the basket shipping pins (4) that secure the tub during shipping.

Washer make sounds, like brake sliding during mid cycle

Could be that your washer is unbalanced internally causing the tub to be rubbing against something else internally. Also check that your fan belt has automatic tensioning when it spins the tub.

My washer wont spin or agitate and there was a burning smell

Hi
Older top load washers use a belt to drive to transfer the energy from motor to drum. However, if the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning "rubber" smell. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer. The solution is to replace the belt with a new one. To replace the belt you can open the back lid of the washer
To replace the belt carefully pry up on front washer top to release plastic keeper pins, remove 2 Phillips screws from beneath lower front washer panel, slightly lift upward on panel to release. Now remove old broken belt, push new belt beneath large tub pulley and put belt on small motor pulley. After this push back belt tension /idler arm, start belt on large tub pulley, turn tub pulley by hand to run belt on, release tension on idler arm. Replace front panel and lower top.
Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more information.

I already fixed this problem with the same washer. You need to replace the metal yoke that spins. Its loose. Remove and replace the nut also that hold the yolk.
