Sony HDR-HC3 camera won't connect in HD mode in iMovie HD or FCP HD

My HD camera won't connect when it's in HD mode. If you've recorded HD footage, you leave the camera in HD mode, put the VCR in HD mode before hooking to iLink and the camera won't show up. I've got a lot of HD footage that I can't get off my camera. It works fine if you record in DV and then have the VCR in DV when going to capture footage off the camera. Help!!

I'm on a Mac, not a PC, and have tried capturing with both iMovieHD and
Final Cut Pro HD. Neither will recognize the camera when the VCR is in
HDV mode. Both program is natively HD! All I can think is that there's
some setting on the camera that I'm missing, but have no idea what it
    is.

What software are you using to capture the HD footage? Are you using the supplied software, or another package. It is likely that you have a software incompatibility. i.e. windows will recognise DV natively, but HDV requires specific codecs and software installed on your PC.

  • Anonymous Jan 05, 2008

I've heard of firewire ports blowing on the HC3, and it is a possibility that this is the problem, but if that was the case DV capture would not work either. You could check this by setting the camera to DV output and reconnecting.

I don't use Mac, so I googled your problem and found this thread at SonyHDVinfo.com :
    http://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/showthread.ph...

The poster has a similar problem to you and there are a number of solutions offered - maybe they are applicable in your case.
