Parts to fix train with failed component

Was running train on high (90+%) for 15 minutes when it stopped moving. Looked over at engine and saw smoke coming from underneath carriage/shell. Upon further inspection, a device on one side of the motor appears to have overheated, and the lead from the motor tab broke off the device when pulled slightly. Looks like either a choke or wire wound resistor. There appears to be a 10 or 100 nF cap across the motor leads (appears to be Mabuchi motor from Lionel parts picture). Failure is on white wire side of motor (not yellow). Power transistors appear OK (not cracked/broken/scorch marks on PCB), and the motor has ~3.8 ohms of resistance. The insulation on the white wire has melted back onto the wire at both ends (near the choke and on the other end going into the terminal plug block). Is there a way to test whether I need to replace the control board, or more specifically just one of the transistors in addition to the choke/resistor that fried? Any idea on the part number for that choke? It isn't listed in the parts list on Lionel.

Talked to a Lionel tech who told me that the failed parts were wire wound resistors that can be removed. It was somewhat of an experiment apparently.

You've done the right thing by talking with Lionel. Their techs should be able to guide you trough trouble shooting as it seems that you have some knowledge of electronics.

SOURCE: Lionel train power issue

Answer a number of questions:
Is the tranformer power adequate for the train and is it a working tranformer?
Will the train run by connecting the wires directly to the two points of the train (wheels and center rail connector)?
Are the tracks new?
Is the lockon new?

SOURCE: i bought the set last year of holiday lionel

If all cars are not properly on the track, the engine does not have enough power to pull the cars. Try with engine and coal car only to zero in on cause.

SOURCE: WE are trying to get our lionel holiday train

There is no on/off switch. Remote will give no indication of working. Try putting engine and coal car only and try. I have had this train set for two years and the remote tends to work whenever it wants.

SOURCE: New Lionel Polar Express train set-up issue. The

My son just got this train and we are having the same problem. Taking the last car off solved the problem for us. I think it has something to do with accessories and the transformer voltage output (See page 14 and 15 of the instructions).

I have still not determined why it won't run with the final car but am assuming it has something to do with the lights on the cars pulling too many amps and not enough left to run the train. I will let you know if I find a solution. If anyone else knows how to solve the issue, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

2009 GMC Acadia rpm is running high and giving p0497 code

hot or cold engine High and how high is RPM not told.
no it is not evap failing to cause RPM failures.
2 problems sure, but not THE problem
well gas cap loose or bad is first. simple fix that is
costs nothing, and cap good or cap bad $10 fix.but not RPM off.
then purge solenoid.
RPM high is the best clue here. for sure
mine fails every 50k miles it seems and pull the valve
and flex the valve inside while spraying silicon oil spray inside it
and it goes 50k more miles costing me 50 cents lube.

Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System No Flow During Purge

the test in the service manual are extensive
example
  • A loose, missing, or damaged fuel fill cap can cause this DTC to set.
  • A stuck closed, blocked, or restricted EVAP canister purge solenoid valve, can cause this DTC to set.
  • A blockage or restriction in the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve vacuum supply hose, EVAP canister purge solenoid valve purge pipe, EVAP canister, or vapor pipe, can cause this DTC to set.
  • A temporary blockage in the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve, purge pipe or EVAP canister could cause an intermittent condition. Inspect and repair any restriction in the EVAP system.
  • To help locate intermittent leaks, use the J 41413-200 Evaporative Emissions System Tester (EEST) to introduce smoke into the EVAP system. Move all EVAP components while observing smoke with the J 41413-SPT High Intensity White Light. Introducing smoke in 15 second intervals will allow less pressure into the EVAP system. When the system is less pressurized, the smoke will sometimes escape in a more condensed manner.
  • To improve the visibility of the smoke exiting the EVAP system, observe the suspected leak area from different angles with the J 41413-SPT .
  • Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records vehicle mileage since the diagnostic test last failed may help determine how often the condition occurs that caused the DTC to set. This may assist in diagnosing the condition.

the valve is here "P"
#10 if it leaks running, stuck open rpm can go wild
or the hose to it is cracked

The smoke unit stopped working. been run only 5 minutes

??? not sure why a evolution would have a smoke unit in it , but anyways its possible that trains were shipped with only a small amount of smoke fluid in them (makes shipping less messy) a bottle of smoke fluid and a few drops of this wonderful stuff is all you should need to get your engine smoking again

Hi, Batteries tend to fail on charging if not used for a while- try a really long charge and see - if it still fails to hold a charge - the re-chargable battery will need replacing.

A little more info is needed.

Compression test: a simple way is to hold the pull cord like you are going to start the saw. A strong motor with good compression tends to either stay in place or slowly fall as the piston moves. If the saw just falls down the motor is worn.

But compression increases as a motor warms up so I don't think this is your problem. If it was the saw would be very difficult to start like my dad's old Stihl 041 Farm Boss from the early 1970s.

20 minutes is a long time to run without a problem.

Consider cleaning the carburetor (or a small can of goof off) with carb cleaner - but don't get it on plastic or rubber parts only metal.

Smoke: How much smoke is there? If there is no smoke the mixture might not have enough oil causing the motor to overheat. Also, many small engines recommend regular not premium gas.

Chrysler town and country

Hello
The engine and automatic transmission in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPEDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

I have an 1994 Ford Escort 1.8 Diesel Van, As i was driving i have felt that smoke was coming from the exaust and very heavy smoke covered the whole road.So immedietly switched my hazard lights on and...

I will try to answer some of your questions, we do not have many vehicles like yours in this area. If you had white smoke out the tailpipe, that was steam. At least a head gasket is leaking, if not the engine block. You can have the Radiator pressure tested and the test should indicate a leak. There are products which are suppose to seal small leaks internally. Your Diesel has a higher compression ratio than a gas engine, therefore it will be more difficult to seal.

If the smoke was Black or Blue, this is a sign of the Diesel fuel getting past the piston rings. If your Fuelpump Regulator is bad inside the Fuelpump, you will have flooding problems or extreme RPM and a runaway motor. This sounds like your problem. The unused fuel is suppose to return to the fueltank. The valving inside the Regulator or Fuelpump has failed and you can not control RPM. All the fuel is going into the motor.

You need someone to disassemble the components and inspect them for cracks and replace bad parts.

Dometic R/M 2652 stopped working...burning smell and smoke

First of all any signs of burning on a circuit board means that a component has burnout in which case replacement will be required. Secondly depending on the colour of the stain , if its a dark colour the systems heaters are cooked in which case the cork insulation has melted the tare off and thats what you see on the floor. if its clear and oil based , the container has rusted and formed a leak ,in any of these scenarios its time to get a new one
