Dell Inspiron 8600 Touchpad and Tracking Ball doesn't work

biju thomas - thanks, but I have already tried the dell site and the different versions of the ALPS driver. Did take the keyboard cover off and solved the AC Adapter/Battery no power on/power off problem that many inspiron owners have had - the ribbon connection was loose (found under the top blue frame that contains the power on button) I have a feeling that a similar loose connection is preventing the touch pad and stick point from working, but couldn't figure out how to take off the rest of the keyboard frame. So that's what I know. Thanks again, zephyr

Download the Alps Touchpad driver for the Inspiron 8600 from the FTP site of Dell (http://ftp.us.dell.com/input/R113813.EXE)

Let me know if this helped!

Well, thatz good to know that you self-troubleshoot. Ideally the parts you are requesting to remove and check are not customer replacable / removable parts. But, if you still want to try it yourself, here is the link that shows how to teardown the laptop. (NOTE there were two versions of this laptop one with the parallel and serial ports and one without - choose the manual accordingly) http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy...

Inspiron Keyboard Jumps Around

Install the latest touchpad driver from support.dell.com

There is a setting in the touchpad tab of the mouse driver. Either Enable PalmCheck or Disable touchpad when typing (Depends on Synaptics or Alps drive I believe)

With palmcheck enabled, the touchpad is disabled when typing

Touchpad not scrolling

You, someone/something else may have disabled it unexpectedly and/or unintentionally; like what happened to me :(

Solution:

- Go to Task Manager

- Go to Mouse settings and Enable "Virtual Scroll" <-- (May be called something different depending on the OS too)

Hope I helped

Where are the touch pad settings for the Inspiron 8600?

Click Start->(Settings) Control Panel->(Classic View) Mouse.

If there are not enough tabs to configure, then install first Alps touch pad driver for Dell Inspiron 8600.

Dell Inspiron 6000 Alps Touchpad not working

Try unistalling the touchpad driver, and reboot. The machine will find the touchpad and reinstall the driver automatically. These have a tenancy to glitch when using an external mouse, and this should clear it up. Let me know.
