Voltage problem with Generac XG8000E Portable Generator

I just purchased a Generac Model XG8000E Portable Generator. The engine continues to 'surge' after warmup and the choke is pushed all the way in. The main issue however is that it is only producing about 95 Volts @57Hz on both legs and does not vary much even with the engine surging. I checked the Volts/Hz using a KILL-A-WATT meter. This seems to be a common problem with this generator. What steps can I take to get it working properly?

The carburetor is probably clogged up. Mix a bottle of carburetor cleaner with the gas to see if that would help. Also check/replace the fuel filter.

SOURCE: 20KW Guardian Generac does not produce 12 volts to run engine

The problem is that the printed circuit board inside the generator draws a little current from the battery even when the generator is not running. Over the course of a few days this can make the battery weak enough to be unable to get recharged by the built in running charger which results in not enough power to run the electronic governor on the generator. Usually the spark plugs will work even with a fairly low battery.

Most of the Generac generators come with a built in trickle charger that runs off of the transfer switch load terminals. If your built in charger isn't doing the job it's either broken or you have the wrong sort of battery installed in the generator.

Carl

SOURCE: I have a Generac portable generator 5000 watts, won't start!

I am assuming the generator worked fine before the oil change. Now that you have done the oil change the genset does not start. These generators have a safety switch, which is basically an oil pressure switch that keeps the engine from running when there is not enough oil in the engine. Make sure that there is enough oil and if there is, look for a wire that runs along side of the engine to a round component. disconnect that wire and try starting. If it does not start then try to ground out the wire to the engine block. If this does not work, then there is other engine problems.

SOURCE: Generac portable generator doesn't produce power

Remove front cover on the genset and you will see the brushes and rings. Clean the rings if black with emory cloth and inspect brushes. Flash the fields by apply a 12V battery to the brushes. the brush closest to you or the bearing is connected to the positive side of battery and the back brush is negative. You have to do this with genset running. You should notice your voltage climb up to over 50Vac maybe even over 100Vac. Make sure to use rubber gloves when flashing fields and keep hands away from rotating parts. if voltage does increase when flashing the the voltage regulator is shot. If voltage does not climb then you will need a new genset or generator end.

Those voltage readings MAY be normal.

The AC waveform may cause your meter to read inaccurately. You would need to use a TRUE RMS meter to accurately read the voltage.

The siple meters actually read the AVERAGE voltage and then are calibrated to mulltiply it by the "form factor" for a sine wave. OFTEN these generators don't produce a clean sine wave. A square-ish wave will read higher on the garden variety meters.

Compare the brightness of a lamp comparing to when run on your utility.

The frequency depends on engine speed ... yours is running a bit fast...check it under at least half load and if off, adjust the govenor slightly.

Beware of an adjustment complexity with an new kind of poweroutlet automatic voltage regulator avr , have you measured the generator UNLOADED for 230 volts ?
because it can be normal that 67 volts output changed when you connect an paint heat gun i was surprised a few weeks ago that i get an GENMAC 8000 that is a look a like generator coming from china build . first i was measuring some of the same output AC instead of 230volts.

Why is it surging under load?

Yep - the carb needs to be removed and cleaned out thoroughly to remove the clogging responsible for the surging. Motor needs a smooth supply of gas - look at what your car does when you jerk around with the gas pedal. Also check the governor area of generator since that keeps motor running at a certain fixed speed. If there is something wrong with it, that will also cause the problemo.

Generac troubleshooting my generac 14kw generator engine runs why doesn*t it produce electricity

Assuming the generator circuit breaker is on, depending on the model it could be the voltage regulator or the slip ring brushes or both. If it's a portable it could be a capacitor problem.

No voltage output

It is possible that your voltage regulator is shot but before purchasing the volt regulator try flashing the fields first and make sure the brushes and rings are clean.
