My Maytag Centennial washer is under a year old and now the lid lock just clicks 3 or more times and then stops and the sensing light keeps flashing but the washer never starts. I was thinking if I disengage the lid lock that would solve the problem.
I had the same problem. The lid lock assembly is broken.
If you are under warranty get it replaced. If not remove the top of the washer
and take out the switch assembly. The 4 wires going in are Yellow, Red, White,
and Blue. If you short the white and blue together, the washer thinks the lid
is closed. If you short the red white and blue together the washer thinks the
lid is closed and locked. The yellow is only there to activate the
electromagnetic switch.
Disconnecting the switch assembly will not work.
The electromagnet locks the lid and it also unlocks the lid. It is not a matter
of cutting the power to the magnet.
Installing 2 switches that connect the red white and blue is the best option if
you want to remove the lock.
The first switch should connect the white and blue. (LID CLOSED)
The second should connect the red to the white/blue connection. (LID LOCKED)
After that the lid should work.

So after further investigation the yellow is connected to the white through the electromagnet.
I am under warranty but can't find the papers with the phone number. Where can I find it?
The wiring from James does work, there is a caveat, but this maybe just with the newer washers. The controller on the washer expects a sequence of events from what James wrote with the red wire. Once you connec the red, the machine will cycle and then lid lock will light up, once this happens, reapply the red and let if flash a few times, the machine will operate normally. I believe this is a safey feature from people just putting the key in the slot to run with the lid open. If the machine doesnt operate after the second time, release the red and reapply. Ive run several loads now. This sequence is annoying, but will get the machine working for the time being. Hope it helps anyone.

if you know the sequence of operation of the washer you only one switch. I'm a master electrician, I've been in the trade 17 years.
A simple toggle switch works great. Here's how.
the white and blue wire, connect together on one terminal of the toggle switch, lid closed. The red wire connect to the other terminal on the toggle switch.
Washer sequence, is sensing lid locks, turn toggle on. The next stage is the washer will unlock the lid, the lid lock led will flash, turn toggle switch off. You will then hear a click, turn toggle back on, lid locked. Works great!
cap the yellow wire you don't need it.

This model Maytag is actually manufactured by Whirlpool. To access the lid switch on this particular model, all you should have to do is remove the operator console. The console has a retaining clip on each side holding it to the cabinet top. To release these clips, simply take a putty knife and slide it under the left and right front corners of the control panel push straight in towards the back of the washer. The clips will depress, allowing the operator console to be lifted up. The lid switch is mounted next to the left lid hinge. Refer to the "Top and Cabinet" parts illustration, Item 6 at searspartsdirect.com:

HINT: In some cases, what may appear to be a bad lid switch, may only be an actuator adjustment. The acutator on these models is the rod attached to the left lid hinge. You can bend the rod slightly to adjust the contact with the lid switch, or it may be tightened as necessary. If the switch toggles (clicks) by hand with the actuator rod removed, the switch typically is not bad.
