SanDisk Sansa E260: How do I reset the WHOLE thing?

Look, all I want to do is start off fresh and new by reseting EVERYTHING. The Songs, videos, pictures, etc. I recently had a load of problems with it and I got most of them figured out but some are still occuring. Like my doubled songs. I Need To Restart The Whole Thing So I Can Get It Right This Time So I Don't End Up On This Site Again, no offense to www.fixya.com. Please, yall, put your thinking caps on and please help me.....POR FAVOR!

  • Anonymous Jan 17, 2007

Well, i tried that to solve my last problem where it was stuck on the "refreshing database" screen, and I tried it for this situation also and it's not working. Should I just return it to the SanDisk Company or get it repaired?

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2007

Hey Zombie, after working with the info you gaveme I was able to fix it. I guess I didn't do it right the 1st time. Thanks!!

Every single song that i put on my sansa wont play, and all it says is bad track and then i freezes. How can i fix it?

  • pocki Dec 03, 2007

Some of my folders (not files for some reason) just stick. They won't be deleted and formatting doesn't work, if I reenter said folders/album they won't play either.
I tried Zombie's solution but nothing happened. When I connected my player to the computer again everything was left, including my normal stuff that I can delete manually.

How do I reset the Sansa e260 player

  • rbshevlin Dec 28, 2007

I recently updated my firmware. soon after I put a new video on the e260. everything was fine for about one day, then suddenly my vidoes were "gone" , (but so was the space). Bascally, I've "lost" about 1.2 gig of ram that the device can't find. I then deleted all my songs off the device, but it still shows in info that I only have 500mb of space left (even though there are no song, no pics, and no videos on the device). How can I "reset" this back to factory (initialize the device and reload firmware). I've tried having it refrach it's database numerous times, but it does not good. I've also delete the ps5000.dat file, but I still show 3800 mb used, 500 mb free.

  • Anonymous Jan 02, 2008

Somehow, i got 6mb to much onto my sansa E250 and now it cannot access the music DB. i want to format or clear the whole thing so that i can start of fresh. i would like an answer ASAP please. thanks.

when i first turn on the player it says san disk (black and a bit of white top and bottom boarders) and then 5-10 sec. later the screen goes completely white and then starts all over again meaning (it says san disk again and the screen keeps going white) over and over nothing works, it wont play music no sound when i plug it into the computer it does nothing i read a thing on this site say to wipe out the system and i did it with the recovery mode and i don't know if it worked or not because it just doesn't play the very first problems where: downloading song (they never went on), when i played a song it froze before the song even started, couldn't delete songs and add new ones if i added new ones say i had 453 songs and mines a 4gb and so i put about max.10 songs on and i disconnected the player and turn it on and it say i had 442 or something it went down.

WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW YOU RESET THE WHOLE THING- HAVING SEVERAL PROBLEMS LATELY. I DELETED THE PLAYER FROM MY ACCOUNT ON NAPSTER BECAUSE THE PLAYER WASNT BEING RECOGNIZED. • gbeckwilson5 Aug 05, 2008

I have the same problem except on mine, I have one song that has replaced over 300 songs. When it gets to this one song, my player freezes up, you have to take the battery out to get it to cut off. Plus the screen has turned blue and you can't see the screen anymore. The only thing good is, it still plays some of my songs.I have tried several times to reset it and remove all songs so that I can redo it but none of them are removed yet. When I first got this thing, a month after I got it, these problems started and I had a warranty on it but I was told to just reset it and the problems would go away. Why have a warranty on something that the company doesn't replace.

ive tried putting it into recovery mode but as soon as i turn it on again it says 'load to main image failed, please enter recovery mode'

ive tried changing the battery but then it wont charge at all and wont turn on, even if i plug it into my computer

ive opened up the whole thing and found the main circuit board and i cant seem to find anything wrong there

on some mp3s theres a small whole you can poke with a pin which just wipes the whole thing and resets it, but my sansa doesnt have one

the sansa e270 I have is a worthless product. very poor excuse for an mp3 player. sometimes it thinks its charging when its not plugged in... and when it is plugged it, the whole device has to be rebooted in order for it to recognize it being connect. it doesn't seem to hold a decent charge even with a brand new battery. I've tried several formats and firmware updates and downgrades.
You get what you pay for so I'm going to take it up a notch and get the ipod.... so much more reliable

I had the same problem, I dis almost evething for one week.
For me the solution was this:
After entering the recovery mode (turn off the player, move the hold button to the right, and press the on and rec button, then conecting to the computer).
when the 16 mb folder opens create a NEW FOLDER (not a text document) called "Sansa.fmt". then disconec the usb and it was fixed.

I just had this same issue with my Version 1.0 e260. Upon contacting customer support, they walked be through the reformat process. It is similar to the above solutions, but a executable file is not required.

Make sure that the player is disconnected from the computer.

1) Double click on My Computer so that you can see it on your screen.

2) Turn the player off. You might have to hold the power button down for up to 20 seconds to force the player off.

3) On the top of the player is a Hold switch, move it to the right (toward the headphone jack) so you see Orange.

4) On the left hand side of the player is a Record button, press and hold it while connecting the player to the computer. Continue holding the Record button until you see a new icon under My Computer called 16MB FORMAT. Once you see that icon you may release the Record button.

5) Double-click on the 16MB Format icon on your computer.

6) Create a new text file by clicking on the File Menu-->New-->Text Document.

7) Rename the new file to 'sansa.fmt'.

8) Disconnect the player from your computer and it will reformat your player. You will lose all your content, but your player should be back to working order.

Hope this helps!

So my memory was bugged and i used only 200mb but it said i used 2gb.Do these steps to fix and reset your sansa models very quickly!
Step1: Open "My computer".
Step2: Plug your mp3 in.
Step3:Right click on your mp3 hard drive on your computer
Step4:Click on "format..."
Step5: a screen will pop up and say "Quick format" Then click quick format then hit the start button. Then it will say stuff about completly reseting and and warning you.
Then BAM fixed.
Hope it helps!

Turn your sansa e260 on and go into the settings, and down to the USB mode then change it to MSC. Plug your sansa into the computer and it will show up as a drive rather then a device. Open your start menu on your computer and go to "computer" and right click the drive that either says Sansa or (J:) and then go down to format, click, then on the popup hit start, then OK to the next pop up stating that it will erase all data and your sansa will reformat its self. Then unplug your sansa, turn it on and switch the settings back to MTP and your good to go!

"You need to reset and restore your player" by dc2772 (See profile) - November 12, 2006 Enter recovery mode by doing the following (start with the player turned off): 1) Turn on the "hold" function (move slider on top of the player so orange is showing). 2) Hold down the "Rec" button on the left side of the player. 3) Power the player on. The player will enter recovery mode and ask you to connect it to your PC via the USB cable. Do this. The player will then display "Enter USB2.0 MSD mode." Disconnect the player, let it reboot, and reconnect the player. Your player may now be OK at this point, or it may show up in Windows Explorer as a 16MB removable disk. If the latter occurs, try using the Sansa Updater tool (http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1376) to reinstall the player firmware. If this does not work, copy the firmware .mi4 and .rom file from http://ez-files.net/download.php?file=83098b45, copy them to the 16MB removable disk, reboot your player, and try the updater tool again.

I've been having the same refresh database freeze problem for several days. All was well until I transferred a folder containing .mp3, .jpg and .txt files. I think that was the problem. The player was in MSC mode as I was dumping files on a Mac. The exact sequence of steps to get the player out of the freeze were:

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Switch Sansa to Hold (top switch toward headphone jack).
  3. Hold record button and connect to computer thru USB cable.
  4. The player should say Recovery Mode and USB connected.
  5. In My Computer you should see 16MB FORMAT J: (or another drive letter)
  6. Double click the drive
  7. Drop down the file menu and create a new folder
  8. Name that folder: sansa.fmt
  9. Disconnect the USB (either end) and Sansa will format and reset system.
  10. Haven't gotten any further than that but may need firmware,software or drivers reloaded/updated.

  1. First you must format it by going to windows media player
  2. under the sync tab press format.
  3. Then disconnect and do all that recovery stuff in the above postings.

The easiest way is to put it in MSD mode go to my computer right click on it and press properties. Find where it says check for errors and check fix errors. You can also right click and format it.

Someone gave me this it really works i had tried everything thank GOd im so happy ___________________________ I have the EXACT same problem and my device is stuck in MSD. Which two files are you talking about? My sandisk support rep did not send me any attachment. Thank you for contacting SanDisk Technical Support. We should be able to fix your player. Disconnect the player from the computer if it is connected. Please copy and paste the following link into your web browser address bar, and then click Go or hit your Enter key. When prompted, choose the option to Save the file to your Desktop. http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/Downl... Once you have downloaded the file, please follow these instructions. 1) Double click on My Computer so that you can see it on your screen. 2) Turn the player off. 5) Double click the file you downloaded earlier and run it. Follow all of the on-screen instructions, and when you get to the prompt where it asks you whether you would like to Format it, choose Yes. Once it is done, click Finish. 6) Disconnect the player and look at the screen. Several things will be displayed, and when you see Key Lock, System Shutdown, move the Hold switch on the top back to the left. 7) Turn the player on and watch the screen. If you see a Refresh Database Fail error, you will need to follow steps 1-7 again until you do not get the error. If it does not work the first time, it could take up to 3 times for it to work.

OK, this is how i did it. if u want to start over w/ music, copy the music folder when u plug it in. then paste it on ur desktop. then go back 2 ur sansa and delete the music folder and all its contents. the u make changes u want on the music folder on ur desktop then copy the music folder on the desktop and paste into sansa where it shows VIDEO ,PICS ,RECORDINGS as folders. it should be back to normal

do not know if it will work w/ windows XP because i have vista home premium and the sansa firmware updater from the sandisk site. no gurantees but it worked for me.

Well I tried all of these solutions, and I even called tech support and although the guy was very nice, nothing worked. He walked me through all these same steps. Start the system in safe mode, reformat it, download the firmware, etc. But every time it goes back to the refresh datbase endless loop. He informed me it's worthless now. And it's not even 2 years old. I will be buying a zune.

My problem its more complicated.

When I turn on my sansa, I goes directly to the Settings menu to change language (to english), then a message appears saying - not enough space for musicDB. Please free3 6mb.
But there's is no music to play. another message appears when trying to play music -- no song

Now, I've tried formatting it, about 7 times now.
The other problem is that when it's plugged to the computer, the sansa says it's connected, but my compuer doesn't seem to find it, neither with windows media, sansa updater nor My computer (folder).

any ideas? help, please.

PS. my pc runs with Vista

Reset All
NOTE: THIS IS AN ADVANCED OPERATION AND RESTORES ALL SETTINGS
TO THE FACTORY DEFAULTS. NORMAL USERS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED
TO PERFORM THIS OPERATION!
If your device freezes up press the Menu button and hold for 15 seconds.
This is like a power down of the device. Once you perform the reset, the adjustments you made during last operation
will be gone.....look and see if there is a boot file in one of the folder on the player. If there is delete this file....This file gets put on the player when booting your computer with the player connected.....Download Update (http://mp3support.sandisk.com/sansa/Installer/1082/SansaUpdaterInstall.exe)
I had to use my labtop to recognize 2.0usb port Go to my computer scroll to sansa or your MP3 player and open the music folder and open each sub folder and delete Songs manually then delete the folders them selfs then format a couple of times hope this works One of the cd's I put on my sansa had some file in it that made my tracks bad and was hard to delete follow above it worked

SOURCE: SanDisk Sansa E260: How do I reset the WHOLE thing?

I have an easy and painless way to do this.

First open your mp3 player and go to settings. Under the USB menu change it to MSC. Then plug in the mp3 player to the computer. Open the My Computer on your desktop, right click on the Sansa mp3 player and click Format. Make sure Fat32 is checked and Quick format is UNchecked. Then format the mp3 player. After that it should be clean and work just like a USB drive.

Hope this helps.

SanDisk Sansa E260: How do I reset the WHOLE thing?

For Bad Track or the message about 6 MB needed in database, you need to run a ChkDsk first before resetting the device, otherwise it will re-occur. Put the unit in MSC mode, then connect the player to your PC.
Next, find the drive letter (whatever it is...let's call it X:/Sansa E2xx) in Computer.Right-click on the drive. Click Properties/Tools tab and Error-checking, and then Check now. If you have an option to fix things, tell it to do that.
You can also run a chkdsk by accessing the start menu (the Windows orb on the lower left side of your screen in Vista), and type "cmd" (without the quotation marks) in the "Search Now" field and hit enter. Then type chkdsk X:/f (replace X with the drive letter of your Sansa).
Windows will check for corrupt files and ask you if you want to save the bad files (or chains). Don't save them.

After this, to reset the player:
1. Select Settings in Main Menu.
2. Select the Reset item.
3. Select the Yes item.

SanDisk Sansa E260: How do I reset the WHOLE thing?

Holding in the power button for 15 seconds or longer should reset it/turn it off. Then, you need to do a firmware upgrade from Sandisk's website so that you can start over from scratch.
These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.

Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer. Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced.
Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website.
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp
If these fail, then:
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version).
You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer.

Recommend that U get (purchase) a good anti-virus like Shield Deluxe to protect Ur system. Use Msconfig to cleanup Ur startup and use disk clean then defrag. Clean and defrag often, once a week. And keep in mind that itunes is a Mac program and nothing runs perfect on windows.
