    Same problem! HELP!

  • Anonymous Dec 03, 2007

I have the same problem. When I have the camera in the mode to take pictures or videos I get the message "turn the power off and on again" - I am not able to take any pictures. However, I can see the pictures in view mode, and was able to put them on my computer.

    same problem!

  • Sanjaymeht Mar 08, 2008

After power-cycle, it works but gets this message very often. Sometimes I have power-cycle several times before it is ready to take pictures.

  • TBLS Apr 15, 2008

Exact same problem. The lens extends and retracts while the word "ACCESS" displays on a black screen. I can view stored images and download them. I just can't take any new pics.

The only thing is notice is that the little blue button/catch that used to hold the battery in place is missing. I can close the compartment and have power. But, as soon as I open the battery compartment, it springs out because nothing holds it in place when the door is open.

    Should I fix or replace?

  • pvcatlover Apr 17, 2008

yes, I have exactly the same problem with my dsc h1. I can see recently taken pictures, but when I switch modes, the word "Access" comes up and then, "Turn the power off and on again." It used to be a great camera. Any ideas?

Hi,

Because I'm a moron, I didn't know that some companies sell broken digital cameras on eBay. As a result, I bought a broken DSC-W80 that shipped with the lens extended and the turn on/turn off problem. I noticed that the top part of the lens was crooked. I was able to firmly pull the lower end up so that it was level. It snapped back into place and now works wonderfully. I guess it was worth the $113 + shipping.

Same thing happened to me.i was so close to dump the camera to the trash can..i tapped on the lens ..reset the camera..tapped again..did that for like 20 times..it suddenly worked. i dm not sure if it was reseting or the tapping on the camera that fixed it. to reset take the battery out hold the power for 15 sec ..put the battery in ..turn on again.

This happened to my camera a few months back, and finally I tried re setting the camera . There is a re-set button, see manual for location. That solved it. Now, my camera is doing it again, so I am off to try the reset button again. Hopefully it will work. But I am guessing there maybe a larger problem that will need to be addressed sooner or later???

Solution # 8 worked. Just keep turning it on and when the lens goes in and out tap it. I actually wiggled mine a little. I had to do it 6 or 7 times but it finally stayed out and began working again. WOOT. lol

I have a T3 I got from Hong Kong. I live in the US, so Sony was funny about repairing it under the recall. After a bunch of haggling, I had to pay shipping to and from Laredo, TX.
They repaired that problem, but later the focus was not so good.
I lived with that, but then got the "Turn off/on again" message.
I emailed Laredo & they would only tell me about the flat fee $121 for fixing.
I started looking for other cameras, but the above inspired me to try fiddling with the lens.
As I turned on the camera, I gently flipped the lens cover open (downward). It moved partway and I got the same message. I kept trying and eventually it opened all the way. NO MESSAGE! YAY!
Sometimes I have to turn the camera on in "play" mode, flip the lens open, then turn the switch to "record" (take photos). However, it's better than paying another $121 to Sony!
I'll never buy another Sony camera. My Panasonic and Nikon have lasted forever. 2 repairs in 3 years on the Sony is too much.
Anyway, hope this works for you!

Hi there, not quite actual anymore, but in case somebody got here from google like i did. i had a similar problem with my dsc p52. problem was with the openign mechanic, caused by powering the camera on and off with batteries wich were low. if your camera makes some strange mechanical noise when powering on i guess its the same. i opened the camera, detached a small wire (black and red) coming from the front part of the cam to the platine, wich was the power chord for the opening motor. then i had to get to the front by removing everything from the front case. well, right by the motor there was a ring wich was opening the lens cover. i turnd it to open the cover. (there actually is a switch wich tells the camera the status of the cover, wich was the problem..the switch never was switched:) problem fixed. new problem: cover stays open. i dont care. excuse my english.. im german.

I had the same problem with my sony w350, which was bought overseas several months ago. tapping and dropping to the carpet did not work. I don't have the receipt with me, went to SONY Australia, They don't do warranty! what a joke. I searched Internet and am amazed that how common this problem is. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of similar cases out there. What a shame, Is Sony really serious about the business? I would never buy SONY camera again!!!

Same problem, I also gave it a few taps after the lens has been fully extended. It didnt work after the first round of giving it a tap, but it eventually worked after giving it a slightly harder tap.

Mine did the same thing, and after I read this, I decided to turn the camera on, and as the lens was extended, I gave it a couple of taps. It worked! Try not to hit it too hard though.

If the image is displyed during Playback the LCD is perfect. Just check whether you can connect the camera by USB mode and see whether the recent images are stored.

SOURCE: turn the power off and on again displayed

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

Problem with sony cyber shot dsc- w80

I jeremy- i was having the exact same problem today. I phoned Sony repair, who then had me take out the battery and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds..reinsert the battery and power up. Didn't fix it. I came home and read some posts on here. I ended up trying the gently twist the lens as it was zooming in and out..I twisted a little and pulled a little. About the third time, it worked. (I also held the power button down with the battery in, just to try..maybe that helped, too). Sony wants flat fee of $91 to fix..is that what they told you?

On my sony dsc-g1 camera when i turn it on it has a saying across the viewing screen that says album data error and i need to know how to get that off.

This worked for me on my Sony Cyber Shot dsc-g1. I would suggest connecting your camera to your PC and downloading your photos first. They are still on your camera - even if you can't view the album.

1. Press the HOME button and select Media Tools from the menu.

2. Select General -> Check Album

3. Select OK in the Check Album menu.

4. The Recovery data... message will be displayed.

Note: Depending on the circumstances, restoring the album data may or may not be possible .

5. Once the recovery process is completed. The menu will return to Check Album.

6. Turn the camera power off and then turn it on again. If the error message still persists, please approach the local service center for assistance.

Here is the link for further information.

This is a hardware problem. Your simptons is tipical of a lens position sensor being faulty.

There is however nothing you can do yourself. Contact your nearest Sony dealer and take the camera to a Sony service centre.

They will quote you for a new lens assembly as they will not be able to replace the sensor only.

Cost should be about 1/2 of what you paid for the camera.

Good luck.
