Hey there...just got our camera today. We bought it and it has been a display model. When we turn the camera on the only thing that comes onto the LCD..is a black screen with the word ACCESS on it. We can't get it to take any pictures or get anything to show up in the LCD. We can get to the blue menu screen. Does ANYONE know what is going on with this camera? Could someone please help.
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!. IT'S WORK!
I had TOO my camera for a year without problem and then on vacation IN THE BEACH this exact problem happened to me.
THE SOLUTION POST FOR SANDRA COOKE WORK!
KNOCK HARD (3 O 4 TIMES) IN THE BASE OF THE CAMERA IN OTHER HAND AND...THAT'S ALL.
Sorry for my english.
THANKSSSSSSS AGAIN.

Hai Thanks for the hint. I just blew hard at the lens and then tapped hard at the back of the camera and it worked. Now it is fine.

I had my camera for a year without problem (very happy with it actually) and then on vacation this exact problem happened to me. I visited a "Sony Store" and the sales people said it was a battery problem "for sure" and if not that it needed to be sent in for repairs. Knowing that before the trip I fully drained the battery and recharged it and knowing only 10 pics had been taken I didn't think it was the battery.
On my return I found these posts. Initially I tried pulling at the lens housing without luck thinking it just wasn't fully extending properly. Then, following solution #2 I just gave the camera a good wack on my other hand and what do you know...... it is up and working like new again. If it happens again I'll send it in for a repair.
Cheers!!
Remove the battery, grab a watch makers srewdriver set .. take out the 4 small screws and remove the cover.
Replace the battery, turn on...
gently push on the side of the lens framework (Spring attached) whilst operating the zoom a few time and voila !!! good as new..
cheers.
First I tried hitting it on the palm of my hand. Then I tried hitting it on a deck of cards. Then, while hitting it on the deck of cards, I threatened to throw it out the window, run it over with my car, and put it in my newborn daughter's diaper. Voila! It worked!
This is normal. During the time it says "Access" the Sony is processing the camera's flash card (memory stick). If one waits, the "Access" screen will disappear and it will function as normal. Try turning it on without the memory stick in the camera, it will start quickly. Those who say hitting the camera or pulling on the lens is the solution are being fooled. While they are taking these ridiculous actions, the camera is processing the memory stick and when they are done hammering their camera and pulling on its lens, etc. the Sony has processed the memory card and works. Wow! Hammer that camera and make it work. NOT!

I just had the same problem... "access" on the screen and then "turn your camera on and off" or something like that. I thought they were kidding by the "hit the camera" strategy, but it actually fixed it!!! It was by no means slamming it on the floor or something like that.. I hit it a few times gentle, and blew the lens, and it suddenly started working...
Thanks all!
Camera was sent to Sony for repair - Not sure what happened, but the repair paperwork states that parts used "Lens Assembly" - Repaired Lens Operation - A complete repair and returned all functions to factory specs. Auot Focus Test, Check, Recalibration and realignment, software download, test, check and complete recalibration, general test, check, clean and repair all functions and systems.
Lots of ideas here - glad I checked this site. We used compressed air on a Sony Cybershot DSC-W55 and after a few blasts it is working fine again. Compressed Air is my friend and can be yours too!
Good work idiots. After reading that most of the posts recommended a good whack that is what i did. After a couple of whacks on the bottom, no luck. Access still showing. A whack on the side as suggested by some and voila. Doesn't on at all.
Dsc-w50 ... persistance pays off. I hit it in several directions to the point of hurting my hands and WALLA a picture appeared in the viewer. My theory is if I cant fix it .... I will demolish it to the point no one will ever fix it. LOL alls good
Tapping the camera on a booked worked for me.
I had the same error where only "access" was displayed; the lens kept zooming in and out until it said "switch off and turn back on"
Thanks for the hint!
Protection on the battery contacts with a very small little film sillicongrease on it. i use OKS 1110 , in America Dow Corning DC5 could give the same protection its for all contacts to give it a thin film on it.
Same issue, someone gave me this camera because of it :) So I had nothing to loose trying these tips, even if I had enough tools to dismount it, it's very risky to dismount this kind of HW, mainly when you have tiny electromechanic parts. Tapping in my hand or on a book did not work, tapping it on a wooden table while the zoom operates made it work fine ! But how long ? (I'll try to use it avoiding any kind of hard shock on this fragile case). Good deal for me if it keeps working as the battery is almost new (a sony G model) and I got a 2 GB MS pro duo with it. Thanks for all your tips !
Here's a shot taken just after as a proof :p
One or two wackos and wallah! Fixed!
Okay it;s fixed. I deleted the DCIM and MISC files in both the memory stick and in the fixed memory as suggested on another blog. Didn't work so I replaced the folders. ( when replacing the DCIM file be sure to add a 101_SONY and add one photo. That didn't work at all.
Next I tried the taping on the bottom, first in my hand then on the desk. Did this several times Turning the camera on and off. No good, read further down to tape the left side, also nothing, BUT one tape on the right side was the magic tap.
I love the internet, you guys are crazy.
I love this camer, only 7.6MP, my phone is 16MP, still I love it
THANKS
Whacking it does work. I had resigned myself to spending the money to buy another when I found this site. I blew air on and around the lens (did not work) I tapped it on the palm of my hand (did not work) I hit it on a book (did not work) I smacked it on a table (did not work). Finally I found a window ledge with a marble (very hard and solid) ledge and I whacked it a couple of time and viola. It worked. My camera is a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-w50. It will either fix it or not. The alternative is to spend as much to have it repaired as it would cost to replace it. What do you have to loose?
Hi this sel,
i to had this access problem thanks to pablowerner solution of tapping the camera hard from the bottom and error is gone and my camera is working fine.
I wish all problems in life where so simple.
Wacking it on the table did the trick for me.
Super!
Thanx All!!!
Probobly the last thing i would have thought of was hitting it hard 3 times on the bottom...but I did it, and it worked...but i hit the lens by accident and the lens got stuck at an odd angle so i tugged real hard at it with my teeth and got it back into place but then i accidently fogged up the inside of the lens and it had nowhere to escape to so i hade to re-break the lens and **** out the mositness, and then re-snap it back into place....so the moral of the story is, beat the **** out of it till it works again...
I had the exact same problem and whacking it worked! thanks for the suggestion
Make the camera open and rotate in the middle of the lens. That pieces of glass and than turn on.
I have test it.And it works now .
Greetings
Banging it worked for me, unfortunatly a few months after I got my Fujifilm, I love the Fujifilm so I am not returning it, instead I have one for professional shot and one for girls night out!!!! thanks for the help!!!!
A good hard pound with my palm on the left side and it worked like the day I bought it!!
On another website I found the solution, given by Sandra Cooke.
"The lens is jammed and won’t open all the way. You have to bang on the camera and/or tug on the lens to release it from whatever is causing it to jam when it opens. I started with gentle tapping and tugging…but ended up giving it three good whacks on a tile floor and yanking on the lens like I was going to rip the thing right out of the camera. It kicked on and has been fine ever since." I kicked the camera hard on its left side and it worked!
Thank you, Sandra!
Love it. Camera in the loft for six months, and all I got on the screen was "access". Hit it on the table edge and...fixed! Thanks all!
Hitting the camera or even better dropping it on the floor "by mistake" really helps solving this problem. It is quite ammusing but this solution really works.
Dsc-w100, i saw a post further up that suggested removing the cover - which I did (since i enjoy pulling things apart). tried pushing gently on the lens as it moved in and out - no luck. Reassembled it, slammed it around a bit on the left side - no luck. Gave it one hard wack on the right side and the camera started working perfectly. Trick is to have the camera turned on and cycling while you knock it so that whatever is in the way, gets jarred loose. Almost bought a new camera on account of this, the other option was to fork out no less that $106 for them to look at it - not even fix it yet.
Yep you were all right about the wacking idea. On vactaion in the Philippines and about to spend $400 on a new one cuz these pics can't be missed (they're expensive over here). Took to 2 camera shops in Vigan to no avail...then kicked myself for not thinking to look on the net for solutions first. Sitting here at this internet cafe, camera in hand, I smack it around on the short ends and it WORKS again! Yah, thank you all!
I've found all of these posts quite ammusing. After a call to support I finally found this site. It's not at all amazing that they don't say "give it a good whack and it will work" as a solution!
I pulled and tugged on the lens, banged it on my palm and nothing. Whacked it ******* my kneecap and it slipped out of my hands to the ground with a BANG. Voila!
Amazing! Just as i was about to go out and buy another digital camera, as a last resort i found the above postings about hitting my Sony CS Camera ******* my palm on the left side and it worked like a charm. Thanks for saving me a couple hundred bucks. Thank God for the internet!
Don't try pulling *too* hard on the lens - I just broke my DSC-W30 lens. The camera wasn't responding to about 10 minutes of gentle tugging and hitting, so I guess I got a bit too powerful with it. Not like it was working anyways, but it's still a bummer.

I have the same access error problem, down to the t. I have had my camera for a few months and on Christmas eve of all days it started doing this, I can view the photos I have already taken and the menu screen, but I cannot take pictures. I am very sad because my daughters 1st birthday is in 2 days, please help.
Dear all, obviously this is a quite common problem. My daughters DSC-W30 has exactly the same problem. Obviously before the lense wasn't moving anymore as a sudden it does and it looks like the lens is no longer adjusted correctly. Please help, if there is any simple fix of the problem.
Thanks.
My Sony DSC-W30 camera worked fine for a year and then when I turned it on the black screen displayed ACCESS, tiny yellow light keeps blinking, zoom lens kept zooming in and out but couldn't get out of access, then screen said turn the power off and on again. The battery is full. When I try to turn it off the lens keeps zooming back and forth a few times before it finally shuts off. Hit it like the others said and no change. Â What next?Â
I had this problem with my Sony Cyber-shot that I have had less than a year. It stopped working several weeks ago. I was about to give up and look for an authorized repair place or a new camera when I read the postings here a few minutes ago. A few thumps, not too hard, against a book worked on the second try. Seemed to do best when I hit it on end, the short side of the rectangle. At least for right now, it is shooting. Thanks.
Hey there...just got our camera today. We bought it and it has been a display model. When we turn the camera on the only thing that comes onto the LCD..is a black screen with the word ACCESS on it. la pantalla de mi camara cambio repentinamente de de ir sacando fotos a ponerse negra la pantallA MARCANDO NADA MAS LA PALABRA ACCESO Y EL ZOOM ENTRANDO Y SALIENDO
I had the exact same problem -- I tried all the suggestions with no avail -- then I blew air into the space around the lens where it opens and closes. This fixed the problem immediately. Maybe had some dust or dirt that prevented the lens from opening and closing the way it should. Used canned air.

Compressed air works like a charm.Â
Point the tip directly into the outer lens seal. Tapping on a hard surface against the camera edge also worked, though I think the compressed air should suffice. May require a few attempts to fully clean out the seal.Â
Keep trying, it will work.
Hi I have th excat same error. After the word access stops flashing the phrase turn the power off and on again appears - I have tried hundreds of times but still the same situation occurs - very frustrating
My sony cybershot DSC-W50 is having these problems. I've tried whacking it on hard and padded surfaces, removed the front cover, pressing on the lens framing, and also have pulled and pushed on the lens. None of these solutions have worked for me. Any Suggestions? Please help me!!!!!!!!
when i on the camera it shows access and the lens gets stuck
