The EM takes two LR44 or 357 or equivalent batteries.

What happens when you turn the focus ring? And just out of curiosity, how are you getting to a 30mm setting on a 35-105mm lens?

There is no dedicated mirror lock-up button, the self-timer does move the mirror out of the way when you press the shutter release and the shutter fires ten seconds later.

your reset tab at the back is stuck most probabbly with foam/seal etc

Make sure the shutter isn't locked. Lift the ring around the shutter button and turn it to something other than the "L" for lock position. If you need a manual, you may download a copy from here.

Had the same prob but there was a build up of stuff on the battery terminal...just scraped it off

No. Turn on the camera by pressing the shutter release button halfway. The camera will shut off automatically after a few seconds of non-activity.

Having gone over a month without a response to my query, I assume a fresh set of batteries solved the problem.

Move it a bit (some half circle)back and forth. The slot may be in wrong position related to the roll inside. It should click in when you get the slot in right angle.

check the battery contacts and cean them with a Tip with lighter fluid on the swab
Try again to see if the meter works
If not a capactor in the circuitry has gone bad
Ebay always has these Nikon EM's selling at decent prices that operate still
Parts are hard to finf new for these anymore

This question was or has been posted twice. As I said the shutter curtain damage will cost more to repair then the camera is worth and the only thing to save is the lens.

You can't touch the shutter curtain at all on any film camera and the cost of repairing that curtains far exceeds the cost/value of the camera. Sorry for the bad news but the only thing worth anything on the camera now is the lens.

That's a shame they are/were a great little camera I still have one and use it for night photography. I suppose taking it to a repair place would cost more then finding another used on on the likes of e-Bay. If you do decide to repair I'd suggest doing a search for repair depots in your area.

Pull up on the film rewind knob and the back will pop open.

Having received no response in over a month, I assume this is no longer a problem.
